The Lancet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lancet is one of the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, published weekly by the Lancet Publishing Group, part of Reed Elsevier.
The Lancet is, and has been, outspoken on several important medical issues - recent examples include criticism of the WHO in the African Malaria project, initially accepting and then rejecting the efficacy of homoeopathy as a therapeutic option and its disapproval of Reed Elsevier's links with the arms industry.
The Lancet is considered to be one of the "core" general medical journals; the others being the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the British Medical Journal.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Iraq death toll 'soared post-war'
A study published by the Lancet says the risk of death by violence for civilians in Iraq is now 58 times higher than before the US-led invasion.
The Lancet admits the research is based on a small sample - under 1,000 homes - but says the findings are "convincing".
Lancet editor Richard Horton said: "With the admitted benefit of hindsight and from a purely public health perspective, it is clear that whatever planning did take place was grievously in error."

Lancet: A small pointed knife; a surgical instrument with a short, wide, sharp-pointed, two-edged blade; a little knife with a small point.
Lancets are used today to prick the skin (a finger, foot, ear lobe, etc.) to obtain a small quantity of capillary blood for testing.
The word "lancet" comes from the French "lancette." It is literally a miniature version of the lance once carried by knights jousting on horseback and, somewhat more recently, by mounted cavalry.

THE LANCET IRAQ MORTALITY SURVEY: THE UK GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE IS INACCURATE AND MISLEADING
On Friday 29th October 2004, the Lancet medical journal published a study of post-war mortality in Iraq which estimated that at least 100,000 excess civilian deaths had occurred since the 2003 invasion; that most were caused by violence; and that most of those violent deaths were caused by coalition air strikes.
In addition, contrary to the PMOS’s claims about the tight focus of bombing, the Lancet study in fact found that in areas well away from Fallujah the most significant cause of the deaths it recorded was still violence, most attributed to coalition bombing (Roberts et al p.4).
The Government must accept that despite shortcomings due to the difficulties faced by a small team of volunteer doctors collecting data in a war zone, the Lancet report is the most comprehensive study of Iraqi civilian deaths since 2003 currently available.

100,000 Civilian Deaths Estimated in Iraq (washingtonpost.com)
The analysis, an extrapolation based on a relatively small number of documented deaths, indicated that many of the excess deaths have occurred due to aerial attacks by coalition forces, with women and children being frequent victims, wrote the international team of public health researchers making the calculations.
The researchers called their estimate conservative because they excluded deaths in Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that has been the scene of particularly intense fighting and has accounted for a disproportionately large number of deaths in the survey.
The researchers and the Lancet editors acknowledged that the study has clear limitations, including a relatively small sample of violent deaths that were examined directly and the researchers' reliance on individual memories for some information.

In our Media Alert, Burying The Lancet - Parts 1 And 2 (September 5 and 6), we focused on the media response to a November 2004 report in The Lancet which estimated nearly 100,000 excess civilians deaths in Iraq since the March 2003 US-UK invasion.
I would invite you to consider the possibility that the 100,000 figure produced by the Lancet study has not been widely accepted because other evidence suggests that it is too high, rather than because of a media conspiracy [sic].
I hope I understand probability well enough to understand that the Lancet study suggested a range of estimates, and that the actual figure could be at the lower end of the range.
