The Last Man on Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the earlier film with this title, see The Last Man on Earth (1924 film).
The Last Man on Earth (originally titled L'Ultimo uomo della Terra) is a 1964 film based upon the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend.
She lives with others who have the disease, and the others have decided that because Morgan has killed many of them, he must die.

The other movie, Last Man on Earth, I had never heard of, and recognised only from the intro on the DVD which told me in so many words that it was based on I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
But for some reason, "Last Man on Earth" continues to plunge me into a state of pleasurable gloom, and I keep returning to it every other week like some sort of drug, or one of those amulets cinematic hypnotists dangle before their victims while coaxing them toward some nefarious climax.
Otherwise, "Last Man" still strikes me as one of the best examples of atmospheric film-making in the history of the genre, and it is on this level that I can wholly immerse myself in its special qualities.

"The Last Man on Earth" is adapted by author Richard Matheson (writing under the nom de plume Logan Swanson when he wasn't happy with the results of the film)from his classic Science Fiction/horror novel "I Am Legend".
Unlike "The Omega Man" (which is, admittedly, a guilty favorite) "The Last Man On Earth" does not back off one inch from Matheson's unflinching portrait of a doomed cosmos and a man with a responsibility that would crush, or at least drive mad, the average human being.
Last Man was obviously shot in Europe using Italian actors and there is some annoying voice dubbing, but not enough to spoil the film for the average viewer.

There are sides to choose, tribulations to endure and numerous last stands, large and small; the fear that animates such tales is cousin, of some indeterminate degree, to that other apocalypse, the attention-grabbing star of Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind series and its arguably lesser-known inspiration, The Book of Revelation according to John.
As suggested by the draft title of 1984, "The Last Man in Europe," it’s a romantic genre.

AfterEllen.com - Review of Last Man on Planet Earth
Adam is kept out of the public eye and within the bosom control of Hope until one day he wanders too far beyond the fenced playground and is sighted by lesbians who hysterically scurry in fear of the (sub-human) male.
The storyline pushes the limits of the audience's suspension of disbelief even further when Adam falls victim to a male prostitution house where the few surviving men, immune to the "Y" bomb, are kept and sold at the highest price to “closeted” straight women to satisfy their sexual appetite.
After the last two men on Planet Earth die, Hope learns that she is pregnant from her night of true passion with Adam, leaving hope for “man”-kind despite the lesbian attempt to wipe them from existence.

theyrecoming - horror movie review - The Last Man on Earth (1964)
I think it unlikely that a single man or woman will be left in perfect health, in the prime of life, as we find Vincent Price, surrounded by the corpses of the rest of the race, although anything is possible.
There is of course the possibility that the Last Human on Earth will spend his or her remaining days scouring the Earth for companionship.
Of course, then we wouldn't be talking about the Last Human on Earth, we'd be talking about the Last Human in the Universe, which somehow seems less significant to me, unless he or she is also the Last Sentient Being in the Universe.

The Last Man on Earth preceded Night of the Living Dead by five years, and it pretty much served as its template.
Such similarities couldn’t stay hidden forever: The Last Man on Earth has been rediscovered and is generally now correctly considered as the first modern zombie film (“modern” meaning a deviation from the Haitian origins of zombies and the use of the term as a flesh-eating ghoul as established by Romero).
In The Last Man on Earth, the commentary is present, but it seems like a footnote, and perhaps too much time is spent explaining the phenomenon (the voiceovers quickly get tiresome) with too little action happening.

Fright Site, The Last Man on Earth Movie Review
This 1964 adaptation of Richard Matheson’s seminal novel I AM LEGEND has been accorded classic status in some quarters, presumably due to many viewers’ nostalgic memories of seeing it as a child (a weakness I’ll confess to myself, though not with this film), or maybe just because it’s old.
I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson, which first appeared back in 1954, is not only a great yarn that still holds up over fifty years after its initial publication, but one of the key modern horror novels.
They all, it seems, are after Neville, who barricades himself inside his once-ordinary home each night, in the daytime going from house to house and staking the undead occupants.
