Called the "Godfathers of rap", for their performances which merged street smart poetry that rhymed, set to musical backgrounds, The Last Poets, a seven member group, was formed during the Civil Rights era on May 16, 1968, the anniversary of Malcolm X's birthday, as voices of Black consciousness.
The Last Poets often faced problems with cops and the FBI because of their political lyrics.
The Last Poets continue to stand as shining examples for younger generations of artists.

The Last Poets is a group of poets and musicians who arose from the late 1960s African American civil rights movement's fl nationalist thread.
The original Last Poets formed on May 19, 1968 (Malcolm X's birthday), at Marcus Garvey Park (formerly Mount Morris Park, at 124th Street and Fifth Avenue) in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City.
Having reached top-10 charts success with their debut album, the Last Poets went on to release the follow-up, This Is Madness, without then-incarcerated Abiodun Oyewole, an album which featured more politically charged poetry and which resulted in the group being listed as part of the counter-intelligence program (founded by then-President Richard Nixon).

Last Poets were rappers of the civil rights era.
Along with the changing domestic landscape came the New York City-hip group called The Last Poets, who used obstreperous verse to chide a nation whose inclination was to maintain the colonial yoke around the neck of the disenfranchised.
In an early 90's Paris where Umar Bin Hassan was preparing for a Last Poet concert, Jalal mysteriously appeared and stabbed Hassan in the throat.

The Last Poets are celebrating thirty-five years and Hassan dipped into his bag from his large body of works to enthrall and mesmerize the audience with both classic and new material.
Hassan started off giving a mini-history lecture about the oral story tellers and keepers of the culture in Africa and how that tradition was impacted by slavery and the adjustments Africans in America made to their oppression to allow them to keep their music as an integral part of their daily lives.
Hassan was given several standing ovations, a fitting tribute to close out the Hip Hop 101 Spring semester with one of the keepers of the legacy of African culture and one of the progenitors of Hip Hop.

It was a legal dispute, fundamentally, and for years there was talk of reconcilation.
