Filmtracks: Last of the Mohicans (Jones/Edelman)
It is not surprising that Varèse Sarabande and producer Robert Townson decided to tackle a re-recording of Last of the Mohicans; it is one of the best-selling score albums of the 1990s and continues to gain popularity long after Michael Mann's endlessly re-edited film fades from memory.
But for Last of the Mohicans, we're talking about an original score from only eight years ago, so the difference in quality is only noticable in a handful of tracks (mostly the Edelman ones).
In any event, Last of the Mohicans is still a very good score, and the RSNO adds much needed cohesiveness to the Edelman selections and warrants a listen if you're a fan of the original.

It was the first opportunity possessed by Duncan and his companions to view the marked lineaments of either of their Indian attendants, and each individual of the party felt relieved from a burden of doubt, as the proud and determined, though wild expression of the features of the young warrior forced itself on their notice.

The Last of the Mohicans is an epic novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1826.
Two Native American tribes (Mohican and Huron), typified in the characters of the noble Chingachgook and Uncas and the gothic evil of Magua, are stylized and deeply inaccurate, but were also influential on the public imagination, particularly as it was debating the means and morality of Indian removals.
The plot involves Hawkeye and his Mohican companions Chingachgook and Uncas escorting the Munro sisters, the dark-haired Cora and the blonde Alice, through the woods of New York to Fort William Henry.

'The Last of the Mohicans' misses being a great movie because of Mann's usual tendency toward pompousness, and because the efforts at updating the story sometimes stand out in stark relief against the essential simplicity of the story -- and most of the characters, if truth be told.

In writing The Last of the Mohicans, Cooper followed the example of his contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and the French writer Alexandre Dumas, whose novel The Three Musketeers takes even greater liberties with historical events and characters than The Last of the Mohicans.
Even The Last of the Mohicans, widely considered Cooper’s best work, is an implausible story narrated in a fashion that can seem overwrought to modern readers.

A tale of death and survival, of betrayal and loyalty, and, above all, of the extraordinary bond between a white man and an Indian, "The Last of the Mohicans" is one classic that deserves to be read and reevaluated by each generation.

The first motion picture that director Michael Mann remembers seeing was the 1936 version of James Fenimore Cooper's classic tale, "The Last of the Mohicans," starring Randolph Scott as Hawkeye.
Although Mann was influenced by the original's portrayal of Hawkeye as a powerful, anti-authoritarian frontiersman, he was compelled by Cooper's novel to delve into the complex, tumultuous 18th century events to breathe life into the characters.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Last of the Mohicans is a 1992 historical epic film set in 1757 during the French and Indian War.
As the case was with all the film adaptations of The Last of the Mohicans, several changes and cuts had to be made from the original material for a feasible movie.
Other than a markedly more concise story, the major change to the story was that Alice and Cora Munro's roles were partly swapped: the main romantic plot features Cora and Hawkeye falling in love with each other, rather than Alice and Major Heyward.

NovelGuide: The Last of The Mohicans: Theme Analysis
Although he thinks Indians other than Delawares and Mohicans are liars and “varlets,” he acknowledges the validity of their religion and respects many of their customs.
Much of this is in connection with the Mohicans, the “good” Indians, but he also acknowledges that even the “savages” have some qualities to be appreciated—in the way he admires the construction of the Huron village in Chapter XXI, for example.
The tragic irony is that Chingachgook and Uncas, the last of the Mohicans, symbolically represent the last of a dying Indian culture, including not only the Mohicans but all the Indian tribes—dispersed, divided and ultimately destroyed by the coming of the Europeans.

James Fenimore Cooper's trusty old nineteenth century novel 'The Last of the Mohicans' has provided a surprisingly sound springboard for a film that tries and succeeds in restoring a profound respect for the Native Americans.
Yes, it is a story about the Indians and their culture desecrated by the arrival of European entrepreneurs and colonists all relating to Hawkeye/Nathaniel Poe (Daniel Day-Lewis), who as a child was taken by the Mohawk tribe and raised by wise Chingachgook (Russell Means) with the graceful skills and philosophy of the Native Americans.
But it is in the quiet moments where Chingachgook speaks about the Great Spirit, the sanctity of nature, and his waiting to join the Great Council in the sky as the last of the Mohicans that the film's power is best communicated.
