However, the Laughing Man has other plans for Kusanagi; in exchange for rescuing her, he gives her all of his memories that explain the Laughing Man events from six years ago until now.
The final episode slows the pace down and finally begins to reveal how the whole Laughing Man phenomenon began and what is motivating the Laughing Man. While not action oriented like the previous two episodes, the narrative does not drag at all and manages to suck you into the whole mythos.
And with Section 9, the government, and the Laughing Man using every tool at their disposal, this volume is the best of the series to date and one of the best pieces of entertainment in general.

They are also found investigating a facility for the treatment of children with 'cyberbrain closed shell syndrome' – a malady which renders the victim unable to cope with the cybernetic interface in their artificial brains.
The Complex Episodes continue to push forward with the Laughing Man storyline and it's an amazing piece that's bringing to light a number of issues in dealing with society and how it has to handle a changing world like this.

The artwork is sort of interesting and the plot is standard anime fare (young boy watches his father killed by an assassin and vows revenge, grows up to be a sword-swinging badass with an annoying sidekick).
While this anime is not for the weak of heart (or stomach) it stands in my mind as one of the classics of the genre, heartily recommended for anyone looking for an intensely cerebral scare.

I think that while anime explores often very different and complex issues, it is also very ungrounded, which occasionally leads to very poor reasoning and analogies being drawn.
The Laughing Man is really the postmodern self taken to its logical conclusion: there is no core, everything is socially constructed, he may not even have a single meaning except for what other people impose on him in their interpretations.
What I like about this anime is that it is grounded in at least some world-building and a sense of what may and may not exist in the world.
