The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse : film review
Initially it seems like an odd decision to focus on these three, but one of the League's many joys was the way they gave depth and shape to all their characters as the series progressed.
This is a film that works within its own parameters, necessarily ditching some of the show's fler elements and instead humanising previously one-note characters, a process that is made possible by the not inconsiderable acting talent of the central trio, especially Gatiss as the repulsive but commanding Briss.
The League have envisaged this as a stand alone film and, while it has no real narrative connection with its TV counterpart, it's hard to imagine what you'd make of it without prior knowledge of the characters and their world.

LXG: THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN is based on the brilliant premise spawned in the graphic novel by Alan Moore (FROM HELL).
It's 1899, the turn of the century, and the world (not unlike today) is riding the crest of a technological tidal wave raging toward the rocky shore of utter doom and damnation.
Its plot is tedious and disconnected; its attempt to cohere and bond the LEAGUE as a heroic force to love, admire, and be reckoned with is nonexistent; and even its marginal attempt to bring character to the characters is stilted and drab.

Movie Review for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - 2003-07-11
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is not exactly a wham-bang superhero spectacular in the same vein as Spider-Man or Daredevil, but it is an undeniably interesting experience for a mid-July blockbuster.
Both films use the technological ideas of Jules Verne to move the story forward by placing advanced mechanisms such as automobiles, submarines, rockets, and bulletproof vests in the late 1890's and making them clunky yet so advanced.
A nice time-warp affect propels the viewer into this faraway time while entertaining with some nice summer blockbuster clichés: a villain who wears a silver-mask and carries a scary-looking scepter, an army of foot soldiers who cackle during their evil deeds, and an early confrontation between the heroes and villains to establish each other's goals.

There seem to be two kinds of composers in Hollywood today: those who are assigned to score a terrible film and respond in kind with an equally atrocious score, and those who are assigned to said stinker and use the opportunity to write great music despite the lousy source material.
My favorite musical moment in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a track towards the middle called “Nautilus – Sword of the Sea.” I like the way Jones establishes new ideas in a given cue, and then develops them by the end of the piece, as if he’s composing a little single movement symphony.

But the film's eagerness to develop these famous fictional characters results in a mid-section that feels overlong by about 20-minutes (all the members are aboard the Nautilus, Captain Nemo's legendary ship, and each character gets their own sequence in which we learn something about them individually).
The most intriguing figure in the film is Nemo himself, but since he's played by an actor nobody's ever heard of, he barely receives any screentime.

Promotion for the film has been reasonably intense and audiences, given their insatiable lust for horror films these days, should have no problem tending to it.
The film, sympathetic to bowling's dire plight while nonetheless clear-sighted about its shortcomings, charts both Miller's efforts to reinvent the league and the day-to-day life of four pro bowlers: rude and crude Weber, buttoned-down league superstar (and horseshoe-pitching champion) Walter Ray Williams Jr., up-and-comer Chris Barnes, and down-on-his-luck faded great Wayne Webb.
The film wisely admits—via the image of top-notch bowlers with sweat-stained beer bellies, as well as with a reality-mirroring-fiction scene featuring Odor Eaters (the tongue-in-cheek sponsor of Woody Harrelson in the Farrelly Brothers' Kingpin) actually endorsing Williams—that some of the sport's problematic stereotypes contain more than a hint of truth.
