Heorot is the stronghold of king Hrothgar in the epic poem Beowulf.
Heorot is Old English for hart or stag; see under Hartlip at BBC page.
Larry Niven's Destiny's Road is also set in the same universe, but only mentions the events in Legacy Of Heorot in passing.

A military man among scientists, Weyland is painfully aware of the innate separation that exists between himself and the rest of the idealistic, pacifistic colonists.

SF Reviews The Dragons Of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes
Back on Heorot, years later, the colony has survived the super-fast alien "Grendels", and is has grown enough to experience political dissension on the future direction of the colony.
The surviving original colonists, fighting their own personal battles with the brain damage they suffered from the suspended animation during the trip to the colony, and unable to forget the horrors of the original Grendel attacks, are much more cautious.
Well this is Larry Niven et al, and it's the sequel to "The Legacy Of Heorot" so it had to be bought and read as soon as I found it.

This sequel to the authors' bestselling The Legacy of Heorot (1987), in which "Earth Born" colonists vanquished an alien life-form known as the Grendels (hence the title here), starts slowly.
The sequel to The Legacy of the Heorot, Beowulf's Children continues its predecessor's tradition of lively action and an extremely rich universe for it to interact in.
However, whereas "Legacy of Heorot" was a fast-paced and horrifically engaging monster thriller, its sequel is a gentler, more meandering story that focuses primarily on the conflicts and ambitions of the human colonists of Avalon, with the Grendels and the other dangerous Avalonian lifeforms taking something of a back seat.

Review of The Dragons of Heorot by Niven, Pournelle and Barnes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Sequel to The Legacy of Heorot, the second generation of colonists now want to expand onto the mainland, first studying the biology and ecology before moving over permanently.
They find grendels that act cooperatively, and when two members of the colony get eaten to the bone by what looked like a cloud of dust (invisible grendels?) they find there are things just as dangerous as grendels that they know nothing about.
There are various irritating inconsistencies in the early part of the book, just in style ('miles' after talking about 'kilometres'), and huge inaccuracies about autogyros (they hover in the book).

 Beowulf
After surviving the near fatal debacle of the Grendal Wars in, The Legacy Of Heorot (not reviewed here), the original settlers of Tau Ceti Four must now contend with their grown children and their desires to start their own community off the safe haven of Avalon Island.
In 'The Legacy of Heorot' we were introduced to the human colonists of Tau Ceti Four, and to the terrifying grendels, the extremely deadly indigenous predators.
In this, the sequel to one of the best science fiction horror novels yet written, we revisit Camelot Island, the isolated home of the human colonists, where a new generation is insistent on claiming its legacy.
