Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is the resting place of numerous famous figures, including Washington Irving, whose story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in the adjacent Old Dutch Burying Ground.
Sleepy Hollow (1999; see also 1999 in film) is a historical fantasy film interpreting the legend of the Headless Horseman and based loosely around the Washington Irving story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
The legend featured in the story is that of the Headless Horseman or Galloping Hessian of the Hollow, the ghost of a Hessian trooper who lost his head to a canon-ball during "some nameless battle " of the American Revolutionary War and who stalks Sleepy Hollow in search of a replacement head.

Several of the Sleepy Hollow people were present at Van Tassel’s, and, as usual, were doling out their wild and wonderful legends.
The chief part of the stories, however, turned upon the favorite spectre of Sleepy Hollow, the headless horseman, who had been heard several times of late, patrolling the country; and, it was said, tethered his horse nightly among the graves in the church-yard.
Some of the damsels mounted on pillions behind their favorite swains, and their light-hearted laughter, mingling with the clatter of hoofs, echoed along the silent woodlands, sounding fainter and fainter until they gradually died away—and the late scene of noise and frolic was all silent and deserted.

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow - part 1
From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of Sleepy Hollow, and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country.
However wide awake they may have been before they entered that sleepy region, they are sure, in a little time, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative- to dream dreams, and see apparitions.
Thus, by divers little make-shifts in that ingenious way which is commonly denominated "by hook and by crook," the worthy pedagogue got on tolerably enough, and was thought, by all who understood nothing of the labor of headwork, to have a wonderfully easy life of it.

 EDSITEment - Lesson Plan
The "Legend" has gained a reputation as a ghost story over the years, but Irving shaped it as a comic tale of self-delusion leading to its own downfall.
At its core, the "Legend" is a fabliaux-like tale of rival suitors, with a suggestion that their affections are being manipulated by the lovely whom they both desire.
Point out that to some degree "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is the story of an underdog who goes up against the local hero.

The rejection of his advances by a young woman and his final comeuppance at the hands of a jealous suitor show the schoolmaster's somewhat greater education and sophistication are no match for the wits and wiles of the community members.
Most of the story is occupied with a description of Ichabod Crane and the community of Sleepy Hollow with little direct discussion of the schoolmaster with his pupils.

The extent of Ichabod Crane's literary treasure trove appears to amount to little more than a few psalms and some fabulous stories of witchcraft, yet the illiterate folk of the area see him as learned and the females find this foolish stranger to be the closest thing to a gentleman they have ever encountered.

Though a great flick, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow deviated more than a little from Irving's well-known source material, while a few of the other notable versions (Disney's short film from 1949, a well-remembered TV adaptation featuring Jeff Goldblum and Meg Foster) introudced their own variations on the original tale.
The tale is as you remember: New to the mild hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, school teacher Ichabod Crane tries to fit in to his new surroundings.
Because (true to the original tale or not) this version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is quite simply a crashing bore throughout much of its running time.

This was filmed in rural Utah, and it looks like it; there's no way this Sleepy Hollow set comes close to evoking the Catskills atmosphere the story needs in order to work.
Nor is this film scary--it is much less about the legends that pervade the New York wilderness than it is about Ichabod Crane's lovelife and the antics of a couple of town morons.
This Legend is a goofy adaptation, with just a touch of scariness, appealing for a family looking for gawky Jeff Goldblum to help them kill an hour or two.
