The Legendary Pink Dots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Legendary Pink Dots are a British rock band formed in London at the end of the late 1970s and who, although distinctly non-mainstream, have been musically influential over the years.
The band has, as its focal point, vocalist Edward Ka-Spel, who is, along with Phil Knight, one of the original remaining members of the band.
Some have compared certain of their works with the music of bands like Pink Floyd and Can.

On the next song, the Pink Dots invite their listeners into their garage for a song that harks back to the late 70s, and in the bass and 'drones' arrangements echo early Joy Division.
From the earthy and lackadaisical atmosphere of the past two songs, Legendary Pink Dots plunges into the realms of angst and the outer cosmos on the next two.

It is no short feat of wonder that the Legendary Pink Dots have blossomed as musicians, gracing the music world and especially their followers with approximately twenty five uniquely individual full-length productions in twenty years, each more intriguing and innovative than the previous.
It would not do the LPD players and their cult-like status phenomena complete justice to compare this latest 10-track album to previous endeavors because the content, inspiration, structures, and soundscaped audio imagery is as different now as their debut was back in the early 80s.

For the pair, it marked the first year since 1980 that their Legendary Pink Dots project hadn't released an album-- and they were coming off a year in which they'd released three.
The arc of this album is a fair bit more minimalist than most past Dots efforts, with Edward Ka-Spel's "r"-less invocations tiptoeing through Rorschach blots of keyboard, sputtering, pitch-fl electronics and the occasional mausoleum cabaret breakdown.
The song is a perfect example of how uncomfortable the Dots can make a song, as the tension builds and builds and builds, never to release-- it's a sort of musical adaptation of water torture, but it's intensely seductive as well.

Ten tracks done in classic LPD form, using a nursery rhyme to evoke both the apocalyptic events of a year ago, and the hope that has arisen from them.
The album is absolutely one of LPD's finest, most inspired constructions, and not a day in the life should go by without a tiptoe through the poppies.
Even more amazing is that LPD's complex vision, where fate and whimsy cast stones at each other on some hazy, polluted playground, has not softened a bit over the years.

Throughout their prolific catalogue of enigmatic sound collages that melt into surprisingly catchy paisley-clad melodies, the Legendary Pink Dots present their albums as open-ended adventures with an intertwined kaleidoscopic mythology of chemical playschools, Numanoid technolust, lavish apocalyptic premonitions, and even one Princess Coldheart.
It's Raining In Heaven is a hodgepodge of an album with a few cuts of live material (such as "Puppets Apocalypse") and a sampling of oddball experiments (with "Premonition 11").
On 1997's Hallway of the Gods, the Legendary Pink Dots go on a downer psychedelic trip with cuts like "Sterre" and "Spike," sounding not unlike Love & Rockets at their mid-'80s best (and gloomiest).

Since their first recordings dating back to 1982, the Legendary Pink Dots have been making introspective and experimental music questioning the concepts of religion, science fiction, nature, politics, thought, emotion, and self.
Utilizing glacial rhythms, concentrating on keyboard sounds that other musicians discard as unusable, and topping it all off with the eerily haunting voice of Edward Ka-Spel (credited here as Prophet Qa'Sepel) the Legendary Pink Dots have managed to worm themselves into a niche solely their own.

The Legendary Pink Dots are an unusual crypto-pop collective whose expressive sonic adventures blur the well-demarcated subcultures of '60s psychedelia and '80s doom 'n' gloom.
Primitive keyboards and drum machines playfully march through baroque fusions of New Wave and psychedelia, hinting perhaps at the underappreciated pop of Brian Eno.

The Legendary Pink Dots can get toppled by their own ambition, and often their albums are murky messes hung up on some obscure concept.
With two albums on the same heavy concept (All the King's Horses and All the King's Men) behind them, Whispering Wall is a casual return to the old ways and a decent entry point for anyone attempting to take the unwieldy band on.
