  The Levellers
The Levellers were one of the largest factions on the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War.
They were organised at the national level, with offices in a number of London inns and taverns; a newspaper (The Moderate[?]), and were extremely well-supported from within the ranks of the New Model Army.
The Levellers political ambitions were fundamentally middle-ground, and involved a remodelling of the English political process along the lines of a more egalitarian and less class-driven regime.

The band released their first album, A Weapon Called the Word, in 1990; after its release Miles quit the band -- he was quickly replaced by Simon Friend.
The Levellers' success continued throughout 1992, with more sold-out European tours and the hit Fifteen Years EP; even with all of their success, the band was only able to make a small impression in America.
Levellers didn't contain the same amount of hits, nor did it earn the same amount of positive press as their debut, yet the band's devoted following did not diminish.

 BBC - h2g2 - The Levellers - the Band
But by the time the band launch into one of their early songs, there's no doubt that the crowd will all be moshing together.
The band were formed in Brighton in 1988 when, after the break up of The Fence and Sweet Dragon, Mark Chadwick (guitar, banjo, harmonica, vocals), Jeremy Cunningham (bass and occasional bouzouki), Charlie Heather (drums) and Jon Sevink (fiddle) found themselves bandless and socialising in similar circles.
Taking the name the 'Levellers' after both the area of Brighton called 'The Level' and the 17th-Century republican group of the same name, the band kicked off their career with a series of pub gigs around Brighton, playing their self-penned anti-capitalist tirades.

The procession followed its usual route up the hill and down the high street, led as by Cry Havoc Morris and the Levellers banner, bringing Burford to a temporary halt for 20 minutes.
In the afternoon Tim became the MC and introduced Robb Johnson, who gave the crowd much enjoyment with his humourous songs - followed by the Bravo Steel Band, a duo on this occasion, who played the steel drum and conga and got some of the crowd dancing.

For those of you who don't remember, The Outcast Band were an alternative roots rock band from Woking, Surrey who notched up over 500 live shows around the UK and Europe accross their 5 year lifespan from 1991 to 1996.
The band are no longer together, and although most of the members are still around and keep in touch, some have fled to the far corners of the globe, so it's taking some time to pool together all the memorabelia and facts.
The plan is to document the bands history in full, and provide as much music and visual memories for you to enjoy as possible.

This time around it was The Levellers (pictured above) who - via the production company Junk72 - asked us to create their anarchy symbol as a crop circle to be used as the centrepiece in their latest video.
Once this was done we downed tools and were joined by the five band members Mark, Jeremy, Charlie, Simon and Jon who under our instruction flattened a large proportion of the formation whilst being filmed.

Drowned in Sound - Reviews - Album - The Levellers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Levellers' latest album 'Truth & Lies' is a good stab at turning a '90s phenomenon into a '00s earner.
You won't get the feeling that The Levellers are about to explode back onto the scene, but this album is a very enjoyable slice of pop-folk with an occasional sneer, making this a nineties band that is still remaining within the quick-moving musical spotlight - but only just.
I thought I'd start (and hopefully finish) this off by stating that the Levellers are the aural equivilent of Al-Qieda and even though I've not heard this album, it will suck the balls of a thousand cancer-ridden donkeys and really, I just hope these hippies burn to death from the dreadlocks down.

McDermott's 2 Hours vs Levellers, World Turned Upside Down/Disorder
That the Levellers offer some instrumental aid to this endeavour is a nice touch too, but this is very much the work of Nick Burbridge (words) and Tim O'Leary (instrumentals).
McDermott's 2 Hours vs Levellers sounds a lot like the Levs, who somewhere I read, and I've forgotten where now as I visited the Pub this afternoon, rather appropriately credit this band as the inspiration for their sound.

 About the Levellers
The Levellers and The Sun, strange bedfellows indeed, but then the Levellers have made a habit of confounding expectations.
Said the man who (briefly) signed the Sex Pistols to A&M. Wrong again as the Levellers have clearly stood the test of time, the original line-up still playing with a passion and pride that, having seen off many of their early contemporaries, is still setting a standard that many young pretenders find hard to match.
Logic and longevity suggests that the Levellers have proved themselves as a great British band that is now firmly steeped into the public’s consciousness.

 THE LEVELLERS 'Truth & Lies' @ Blogcritics.org
Amazingly the Levellers have been going now since 1988 and have had considerable chart success in both album and singles terms.
Now they are back with a new album and one that keeps all the band's key elements - rousing anthems, superb violin and a punk twist to the overall sound - but adds a few modern touches mainly in the production and the use of a few dance loops here and there.
What I am trying to say is that when Fairport C 'retire' (and may this be many years in the future) the Levellers will carry on this fine tradition of having a festival and event based on a band rather than place, trends, etc.
