Where he had been relegated to the position of a rhythm guitarist on previous albums (Matthews has joked about Lillywhite's propensity for turning his guitar down until it was almost non-existent), he shoved his way to the front of the music with his dirty, grinding play on Everyday.
On Sessions, however, he has yet to plug in, and his playing takes on a more muted, modest tone, setting the stage for Tinsley and Moore's texturing.

When the Dave Matthews Band set out to record a new studio album in spring 2000 with long-time producer Steve Lillywhite, it seems they had no particular goal in mind.
It seems, because the tracks from those session - the now infamous Lillywhite sessions, available at a Napster clone near you - sounded like a virtual continuation of their previous effort, 1998's Before These Crowded Streets.
The Lillywhite sessions, however, sound dangerously like a dead end, a set that has it moments of spectacular musicianship, but lacks restraint in terms of both the soloing and the lyrics (which are dark and cryptic even for a guy who regularly sings about lying in his grave).

Dave Matthews Band | Everyday | Lillywhite Sessions : ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
At the very least, serious DMB devotees know that ''The Lillywhite Sessions'' is the name given by fans to the disc that the group had nearly finished recording last year with longtime producer Steve Lillywhite before they decided to put the whole project on the shelf.
Go to one of the heavily trafficked DMB message boards like the Dave Matthews Band Mailing List or Nancies.org, and you'll find no shortage of posts claiming that this album is superior to ''Everyday,'' this year's multiplatinum, authorized DMB release.
The subject matter of ''Lillywhite'' is admittedly darker -- many of the songs have to do with death, depression, and the absence of God -- but fans think it adheres more closely to the band's trademark sound.

The now-infamous recordings that were left in its wake (produced by longtime collaborator and studio veteran Steve Lillywhite and aptly dubbed "The Lillywhite Sessions") were leaked wide on the Internet and became somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon.
Nine tracks from "The Lillywhite Sessions" have been joined with two new tracks, the bright "You Never Know," which features the band's signature off-kilter time-signatures, and the album's first single, "Where Are You Going," to form Busted Stuff.
In addition, arrangements of the other Lillywhite tunes have been pared down, a few verses have been switched around ("Big Eyed Fish") and Matthews' performances are notably less playful ("Busted Stuff").

The Stuff is finally here: the missing link, the would-be other side of the rainbow that left off with 1998's Before These Crowded Streets, the antidote to all those who found Everyday a shameless cop-out, and the fifth (RCA) studio album that-- according to the devout-- should have been the fourth.
