Filmtracks: The Lion in Winter (John Barry)
The Lion in Winter: (John Barry) When John Barry scored the stage story of The Lion in Winter in 1968, he was at the height of his James Bond popularity, with the world knowing him only for his sassy Bond scores (or maybe for his jazz band recordings --who could ever forget Beat Girl?).
Upon glancing at the script and cast for The Lion in Winter, one would not have associated Barry with the project even at that time, but his friendship with the director of the film allowed Barry the opportunity to create a score that would change the public's impression of him forever.
On their album for The Lion in Winter, they present the complete score, including the additional cues of "Richard's Joust/Geoffrey's Battle" and "Fanfare for Philip/The Great Hall Feast," both of which are relative early in the film, and the latter of which is a very enjoyable addition to hear on CD.

Granted, remaking 1968 Oscar winner The Lion in Winter seems an odd, not to mention brave, choice, particularly for Glenn Close and Patrick Stewart, who step into roles filled so memorably by Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole.
And to make comparisons easier, this Lion uses the same James Goldman screenplay, which the late writer had based on his own play.

Beginning with the main title, "The Lion In Winter", Barry pulls out some stark Bond-styles brass licks over a marching ostinato that gives way to the first of many breathtaking choral passages, with exciting swirling strings running counterpoint.
The score rolls to the finish line with "To Rome" and "Media Vita In Morte Sumus", two of-a-piece cues that, between menacing snatches of the main theme, perfectly display both the ethereal beauty of the chorus and the power of the orchestra.
Lyrical Mary is the perfect companion piece to The Lion In Winter's more challenging passages, and together they easily make one of the best albums of the year.

Since revenge is a dish best served cold, it seems appropriate that the grand dame of these films takes place in the bleak midwinter of 1183, when the royal family has gathered for the Christmas holidays.
The Lion in Winter remains uncluttered because it cares more for the layered, character driven subtext of its scenes than bogging down in unnecessary historic detail.
The element of royal intrigue, present and accounted for, takes a back seat to the emotional tug of war between Hepburn and O'Toole, where the issues of trust, love, and honor are at stake.

Lion may be my personal favorite Hepburn performance.
The part of Queen Eleanor must be great fun to play—and hugely difficult to pull off convincingly, requiring the actress to slip from sorrow to savagery and back again in the course of a few lines.
Hepburn, of course is magnificent, her eyes alternately welling with tears and shooting daggers—though she is careful never to lose sight of the humanity of the woman who wears the crown.
