Ariel, a fun-loving and mischievous mermaid, is off on the adventure of a lifetime with her best friend, the adorable Flounder, and the reggae-singing Caribbean crab Sebastian at her side.
As I mentioned, I was soooo in love with Ariel from the moment the film came out, and this extended to a love for her voice (Jodi Benson) and her live action reference model, Sherri Stoner, who was basically a brunette Ariel.
I adored Sherri in that behind the scenes special from when the film first came out and was so disappointed that footage of her performing as Ariel for the animators was not included in "Treasures Untold." It wasn't even mentioned.

The film follows the story of a beautiful headstrong sixteen-year-old mermaid named Ariel, who is dissatisfied with life under the sea.
This film signaled a renaissance in Disney animation; the films were popular and financial successes, causing Disney's feature animation department to begin significant expansion, from about 300 artists in 1988 to 2,400 by 1999.
The Little Mermaid is stated as #51 of the 100 Greatest Cartoons.

 DVD REVIEW: "THE LITTLE MERMAID"
When released in 1989, it was a tremendous step forward in animation quality from what had been offered for decades before its release.
While some might complain that the characters are just "sketches" themselves (not in art, but in character depth), one must remember that this is a lighthearted film and that the main character is just a sixteen-year-old girl (and a mermaid at that!).
The film isn't intended to be deep and probing, but instead offers a simple story that everyone can easily understand and identify with, and enjoy while watching it.

THE "LITTLE MERMAID" AND THE ARCHETYPE OF THE LOST "BRIDE" by Margaret Starbird
Of all the possible pictures available from art galleries around the world, it is incredibly significant that the directors of the Disney® film chose to place Mary Magdalene at the bottom of the sea, for it is SHE who represents the lost Bride and the archetype of the "Sacred Feminine" as partner in Christian mythology.
Mermaids are prominent among the medieval watermarks related to the heresy of the bloodline, and some are rendered with the fleur-de-lis of the Merovingians entwined around their double tails.
How interesting that the image of the little mermaid, with the MM's of Mary Magdalene formed at the ends of her two tails and in her crown, is posted at streetcorners worldwide in the form of the Starbucks® logo!

The BigScreen Cinema Guide: Reader Reviews - The Little Mermaid
Mermaid Ariel dreams of a life with humans, much to the displeasure of her father, King Triton.
Disney is at blame for this, a company that has destroyed movie theaters (in my home town, they actually closed the best film of the year, Boogie Nights, so Little Mermaid could run on two screens), but has kept the toy stores alive with their billions and billions of dollars of "merchandise".
Not "The Little Mermaid", a movie that any one over the age of 13 could have seen in its original release, and remembered it.

 The Little Mermaid (1989)
Mermaid doesn’t stand as the best of the studio’s work — from the old days or the more recent era — but its historical importance remains.
Mermaid’s Ariel doesn’t really belong to the new class of Disney heroine, but she doesn’t fit in neatly with the older gals either.
Benson feels a little thin as Ariel, but that fits the character fairly well, since Ariel’s little more than a headstrong teen; we don’t expect her to be a very strong or forceful role.

Filmtracks: The Little Mermaid (Alan Menken)
Menken and Ashman single-handedly took a sinking Disney enterprise of films and yanked it to the eyes and ears of every kid, teenager, and parent in the country.
The fireworks and jig sequence (which is the most visually beautiful section in the film) is remarkable, as is the "Tour of the Kingdom." The finale is a reprise of Part of Your World, and it builds up to the typical choral Menken ending.
The Little Mermaid won Academy Awards for Best Song ("Under the Sea") and Best Original Score, and was additionally nominated for Best Song for "Kiss the Girl." It was the Golden Globe winner for the same score and song.

Disney Archives | "The Little Mermaid" Movie History
Disney artists had considered an animated film of "The Little Mermaid" in the late 1930s, and illustrator Kay Nielsen prepared a number of striking story sketches in pastels and watercolors.
For this film, the artists received inspiration from the Nielsen story sketches that were brought out of the Archives for them to study, and they gave Kay Nielsen a "visual development" credit on the film.
The film probably had more effects than any animated film since "Fantasia;" nearly 80% of the film required some kind of effects work -- storms at sea, billowing sails, schools of fish, shadows, raging fire, explosions, magic pixie dust, surface reflections, underwater distortions, ripples, and bubbles.

"The Little Mermaid" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
The Little Mermaid is based on a Hans Christian Andersen story with a radically changed ending.
While we love the rest of the film and especially the music (which, in my opinion, is Disney's finest soundtrack ever), all parents should at least be aware of these scenes.

The Little Mermaid is another film that I could go on about for days if given the opportunity.
This is not surprising, as lyricist Howard Ashman also served as a producer on the film and made sure that it was more like the classic Disney films, more of an animated musical.
It was the impact on home video, when people began to notice that kids would watch it a billion times a week and, more importantly, their parents would watch it with them.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Little Mermaid (1989)
The Little Mermaid marked a return to the greatness that Disney was once noted for and increased the frequency of their production of such films to boot.
This film, loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, is about Ariel, a mermaid who longs to interact with the world on land and a prince who comes in to brief contact with her, falling in love on the spot.
Plotwise, the story is a little contrived, but this is a fairy tale after all -- and the characters, dialogue, and songs couldn't be more fun.
