The earliest charitable foundation is the Blue Coat hospital, established in 1708, for orphans and fatherless children born within the borough.
In 1826 the corporation founded two elementary schools, one of which, the North Corporation school, was erected in part substitution for the grammar school founded by John Crosse, rector of St Nicholas Fleshshambles, London, a native of Liverpool, in 1515, and carried on by the Corporation until 1815.
Liverpool University, as University College, received its charter of incorporation in 1881, and in 1884 was admitted as a college of the Victoria University.

The Liverpool Blue Coat School - or Blue Coat Hospital, to give it its original title - was founded in 1708 by Mr Bryan Blundell and Rev. Robert Styth as "a school for teaching poor children to read, write and cast accounts".
Blundell was a leading Liverpool shipowner - reputedly the owner of the first ship to enter the town's first dock in 1715 - and slave trader, participating in the 'triangular trade' which linked Liverpool, West Africa and the Caribbean.
The Blue Coat School retained its 'orphanage' role until the late 1940s, the boys and girls in their old-fashioned dress having been a familiar sight in Wavertree during the interwar years.

At the suggestion of Brigadier Tom Robbins, a Liverpool Scottish veteran of the Great War, an appeal was made and the memorial was paid for by the subscription of over 200 members and friends of The Liverpool Scottish.
The work was executed by Mr Alan Roberts, a Liverpool craftsmen, and features individually cast relief replicas of the First World War bonnet badge of The Liverpool Scottish, the Victoria Cross and the RAMC capbadge.
