Review of the Living Bible (1971)
The growing popularity of the Living Bible was one of many signs of the dumbing-down of American culture which took place during the 1960's and 70's.
I was a college student when The Living Bible released [sic] and remember well the criticism heaped on the paraphrase and on Dr. [sic] Taylor himself.
May many lives be changed by the Holy Spirit of God as He uses this form of His Word to cut into hard, troubled, or confused hearts, flooding them with light, and to fill all willing hearts with new, heavenly riches.

The Living Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Living Bible (TLB) is an English version of the Bible by American publisher and author Kenneth Taylor released in 1971.
The Living Bible was a best-seller in the early 1970s, largely due to the accessibility of its modern language, which made passages understandable to those with little or no previous background in Bible study.
The result of this work is the New Living Translation, released by Tyndale House in 1996 which has effectively replaced The Living Bible.

The Living Bible Reborn - National Bible Week - Holidays
In July of 1996, Tyndale House Publishers launched the New Living Translation (NLT), a revision of the Living Bible that seeks to preserve the freshness and readability of Taylor's groundbreaking paraphrase while providing the accuracy and reliability of a translation prepared by a team of 90 biblical scholars.
Many of the changes from the Living Bible to the NLT are small but deft revisions of wording that enhance the readability of the text.
Compare, for example, 1 Corinthians 4:1 in the Living Bible ("So Apollos and I should be looked upon as Christ's servants who distribute God's blessings by explaining God's secrets") and in the NLT ("So look at Apollos and me as mere servants of Christ who have been put in charge of explaining God's secrets").

Obviously intending to paraphrase the entire Bible, he released the Living Psalms, followed by Living Lessons of Life and Love in 1968, Living Book of Moses in 1969, and Living History of Israel in 1970.
The Living Bible was very well received, its popularity boosted considerably by an endorsement from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which advertised it on television and gave away hundreds of thousands of copies.
It is not an accurate translation of the Bible, however, and it does not pretend to be.

The Living Prophecies came out in 1964, The Living Gospels in 1966, The Living New Testament in 1967, The Living Psalms and Proverbs in 1967, Living Lessons of Life and Love in 1968, The Living Books of Moses in 1969, and The Living History of Israel in 1970.
The completed Bible was finally issued in one volume in July, 1971 and was entitled The Living Bible: Paraphrased.
This paraphrase has had the positive effect of causing many people to take up the Bible and really read it for the first time; people who otherwise might never have done so at all because they felt it was beyond their understanding.

The Living Bible continues to be one of the premier paraphrases in the world of English Bibles today.
Unlike other paraphrases (such as the New Living Translation (NLT)), the Living Bible reads much more smoothly, as it was the result of one man's efforts and his one voice.
As with other paraphrases, the Living Bible is not truly a translation, but a free interpretation of the actual Scripture text - so essentially, it is a commentary in the form of a Bible.

The great Bible translations seem to me to be Wycliffe's in the 14thcentury, Tyndale's of 1526, the King James Version of 1611, and then the many good, modern-language translations of the last 70 or 80 years, including the paraphrase-translations exemplified by J. Phillips and the Living Bible.
