The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The song implies that Zantzinger beat Carroll to death with his cane when in fact, he drunkenly assaulted Carroll and at least two others with the cane (a bellboy and a waitress both also reported being attacked by Zantzinger the same night).
Carroll was heard to remark "I feel deathly ill, that man has upset me so" soon after, before collapsing and being taken to the hospital.
In part because the names Carroll and Zan(t)zinger both end on unstressed syllables, the lines of the verses all use a feminine ending, although the chorus does not.

He must be proud of The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll; since the song came out in 1964, he has included it on a greatest hits CD (Biograph) and on a live CD.
Carroll replied: "I'm hurrying as fast as I can." Zantzinger said: "I don't have to take that kind of shit off a nigger," and struck her on the shoulder with the cane.

Dylan describes Hattie Carroll as a 51-year-old maid who waited on tables, took out garbage, emptied ashtrays, and "never sat once at the head of the table." He mentions that she had borne 10 children.
Even the song's title is well chosen: Before I went to Hattie Carroll's church, I hadn't quite understood why her death was "lonesome." But of course, as Rev. Jessup noted, "not one of those people stood up for her"; in a party full of elegant guests, Hattie Carroll was on her own.

I can't say how accurate Dylan's presentation is, but there was a real incident involving the murder of a woman named Hattie Carroll; in fact, Jonathan Cott's book "Dylan," which Rolling Stone Press/Doubleday published in 1984, has a picture of her.
Perhaps someone with more resources at their disposal could state whether the timing would have been right for that to have happened; in any event, while he may have used some poetic license, there is factual basis to the song.

We have Hattie Carroll denied liberty - "on a whole other level" works metaphorically as well as getting rid of the ashtrays - and her liberty is economically straitened in the way that William Zantzinger's is not, with his "rich wealthy parents that provide and protect him" and his "tobacco farm with six hundred acres".

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: The Bootleg Series 5: Live 1975, Bob Dylan, CD, Limited Edition
This generously proportioned two-disc set captures Dylan at his most mercurial, veering from raging songs of protest (a steely, spitting version of "Hurricane," which was, at that point, unreleased) to pastoral interludes of beauty (highlighted by a passel of duets with Joan Baez, including a lovely rendition of the traditional "The Water Is Wide").
Dylan's constant quest to reinvent himself -- or at least his songs -- is in full evidence here, in the grand-scale presentation of the early high-water mark "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" and the woozy, sea-chantey take on "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" (replete with storefront-church call-and-response vocals).
This CD, which includes live material from the famed Rolling Thunder Revue from 1975 is proof that Dylan rocked as much in the 70's as he did in the 60's (and continues to today).

However, most would also admit that the supernatural is still a major theme in Dylan's work; for example, he has written and recorded songs such as "Death Is Not The End", "Ring Them Bells", and "Trying To Get To Heaven", in the lyrics of which a cursory glance will reveal religious concerns.
Later that spring, he took part in the first Traveling Wilburys album project, working with Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and his good friend George Harrison on lighthearted, well-selling fare.
