Topic: The Long Ryders

  TrouserPress.com :: Long Ryders
Born in the South but assembled in California, the Long Ryders (who broke up around the end of 1987) color mild '60s revivalism with country stylings (steel guitar, autoharp, mandolin, etc.) on the five-song 10 — 5 — 60 EP, produced by Earle Mankey.
The Long Ryders found solid footing again with the less selfconscious Two Fisted Tales, an enjoyable album nicely produced in a variety of appealing styles by Ed Stasium.
Metallic B.O., a spirited cassette-only hodgepodge of live covers, interview snippets and general fooling around, was assembled posthumously by the Long Ryders' fan club (and subsequently issued in abbreviated CD form by a British label).

 Guardian | The Long Ryders
The Byrds' (So You Wanna Be a) Rock'n'roll Star is forgiveable, since without the Byrds the Long Ryders probably wouldn't exist and, since their initial demise at the end of the 1980s, guitarist Sid Griffin has made himself an authority on Byrds lynchpins Gram Parsons and Gene Clark.
That the Long Ryders have reformed to promote an effective greatest hits compilation and still have a palpable sense of being out of step is emphasised when Griffin recounts with some vehemence how the band were presented with a ludicrously crass video treatment for And She Rides, a soaring, psychedelic pop song.
This is the Long Ryders at their best: the still-lovely, infinitely bittersweet Ivory Tower ("she's protected from misery"), the joyously self-explanatory I Want You Bad.

For many in the eighties the Long Ryders were the logical successors to the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
Whilst the audiences dress sense dates this concert somewhat the same cannot be said of the music, which still sounds young, brash and exciting and has a sort of classic timeless appeal; which is something other bands of the era in retrospect don't match up to.
The material will be familiar to fans of the Long Ryders and is sure to win converts over who either missed out at the time or perhaps came to the band through Sid Griffin's subsequent work with the Coal Porters or Western Electric.

The Long Ryders were one of the greatest bands to come out of L.A. during the 1980s.
Coming from the long-lamented paisley underground scene, which included such bands as the Dream Syndicate, the Bangles, and Rain Parade, the Ryders were easily the tightest, and well-deserving of their major-label deal with Island Records, following their brilliant debut for Frontier in 1984.
Tracks such as Ryders founder Sid Griffin's "Final Wild Son" and bassist Tom Stephens' "Years Long Ago" capture the essence of the band, which can almost be compared to a meeting of the Flying Burrito Brothers, Neil Young, and the Sex Pistols.

The Long Ryders, for example, burned briefly but brightly in the mid-80’s, playing a punk-country hybrid to a world full of DX7 synths and Flock Of Seagulls hairstyles, a decade before the generation of bands they inspired found themselves christened as the Alternative Country movement and granted their own rack in the mega-store.

The Ryders took a little time to get warmed up, mostly due to a lone drunken heckler who persisted in making a fool of himself, but by the time they were into Run Dusty Run the band were firing on all six-string cylinders.

During his long and prolific musical career, Tom Stevens has recorded over a dozen albums, both solo and with Magi, The Long Ryders, Danny and Dusty, Chris Cacavas and Junk Yard Love and Jack Waterson.
Writing songs at a furious pace, he "made a zillion copies of a demo and passed it to anyone who I thought wouldn't tape over it." This led to the release of Points of View, a six-song 12" EP whose songs were later represented on 1997's Points Revisited.
Most recently, Tom has taken part in The Long Ryders' successful reunion tour of Europe, with more Long Ryders shows in the works, as well as playing gigs in the Midwest with both his acoustic and electric bands.

Twenty years ago, the likes of The Jayhawks and Lucinda Williams used to open for The Long Ryders, then leaders of LA's "Paisley Underground", and their shotgun marriage of punk and country paved the way for much of what's happened since.
Tracks such as "Gunslinger Man" and "Looking For Lewis And Clark" are pure Strummer-meets-Haggard, while "Lights Of Downtown" and "I Had A Dream" demonstrate their debt to the Byrds/Burritos legacy.

As Part of the L.A. "Paisley Underground" movement, The Long Ryders' history is closely linked with other guitar-oriented bands, although their sound was always more explicitly 'country' than their contemporaries.
The album "Native Sons" suggested a promising future, but the band was unable to repeat it's balance of melody and purpose and the group finally broke up in 1987.

Because for the bulk of the '80s, Sid Griffin, Stephen McCarthy, Greg Sowders, and Tom Stevens lived hand-to-mouth, Gram Parsons in one ear and the Rolling Stones in the other, trying to preach to the not yet converted.
From 10-5-60 in 1983 to 1987's Two Fisted Tales, the Ryders released 5 albums and played the world over, ending their career with great reviews, but no money.

Overall, this retains many of the Long Ryders best qualities: punchy electric guitar and drums mixed with a bit of jangle in a Byrds-like way (may the Rickenbacker 12-string never die), some nice acoustic guitar and mandolin playing, and great background vocals and harmonies.
But despite their maturation as a band, there nothing here as compelling as their first few releases.
