The Longest Day (book) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Longest Day is a book by Cornelius Ryan published in 1959, telling the story of D-Day, the first day of the World War II invasion of Normandy.
The book takes its name from a quote by Erwin Rommel: "...the first 24 hours of the invasion will be decisive...the fate of Germany depends on the outcome...for the Allies, as well as Germany, it will be the longest day."
The Longest Day is also the name of a 1962 film based on the book, starring Richard Burton.

Yet there is more: "The Longest Day" also shows the horror of the invasion from the point of view of the individual soldier, sailor, and airman, with great performances from a select group of world-class actors.
One of the fine ironies of the day was the fact that Hitler had taken a sleeping pill and left orders not to be awakened; however, his direct order was needed to free up the German reserves that were very necessary to fend off the allied attack.
Although "The Longest Day" somewhat lacks character development and the typical movie plot that follows the "plight of the hero", it still manages to involve the viewer in the cataclysmic events that surrounded D-Day.

Rommel predicted that the day of the Allied landing on the continent would be "the longest day".
Ryan's book tells the story of D-Day using anecdotes and reconstructed dialogue as well as statistics and description of tactics.
Although The Longest Day is informative and engaging, its style of reporting has aged poorly and overuse of anecdotes sometimes reduces the impact of the events rather than enhancing it.

In a book as concise as Ryan's, only a brief glimpse into the planning and support necessary for a successful invasion is possible, but we do get a sense of the sheer size of this invasion, the most complicated ever.
Re-reading The Longest Day from an adult perspective, as a father of a young son, I wept tears of sadness at the loss, in the prime of their lives, of so many young men, in so violent a fashion.
P.S. A very interesting feature of Ryan's account is his listing of the many people he spoke to in writing the book, their ranks as of D-Day, and what they were doing when shortly before the book was published.

It was written in ancient times to ancient people, so it uses the figures of speech of that day, and we should not impose modern scientific standards on them.
For example, skeptics may say that "the sun rises," but we know scientifically that it doesn't, and in fact those skeptics are just using the common everyday language of our modern culture.
It is also interesting that not only was this event mentioned in the Book of Joshua, but it is also recorded in the legends of Greece, Egypt, and many other ancient nations.
