"World's Longest Yard Sale"... What's It Like? - from Jim and Lynnette's Fun Times Guide
The "Longest Yard Sale" began in 1987 as a way to lure travelers away from the ever-popoular Interstate 40 and I-75 and into the rural communities.
You can jump right into the World's Longest Yard Sale from wherever you are along the way, or start at either end of the official route.
While the bulk of the vendors participating in the World's Longest Yard Sale DON'T have clothes for sale, you'll quickly notice that all of the "locals" try to jump on the yard sale bandwagon by having their own family yard sales at the same time.

The Longest Yard was a 1974 movie about inmates at a prison who play American football against their guards.

The Longest Yard certainly seemed like a promising idea, and though it does manage to generate some laughs along the way, it’s ultimately another in the ever-growing ranks of remakes that shouldn’t have been remade.

Three weeks ago I saw "The Longest Yard," and before I left for the Cannes Film Festival, I did an advance taping of an episode of "Ebert & Roeper" on which I gave a muted thumbs-up to Richard Roeper's scornful thumbs-down.
Indeed after my immersion in the films of Cannes, I can hardly bring myself to return to "The Longest Yard" at all, since it represents such a limited idea of what a movie can be and what movies are for.

 IGN: Longest Yard, The Review
The first is the fact that the film is for all intents and purposes the first thoroughly modern sports movie; it could have been made in 1984 or even '94 and would likely have been the same.
But overall, The Longest Yard is a pretty straightforward comedic adventure, one that will no doubt engender fandom on the basis of Sandler's previous exercise with the pig skin (The Waterboy), but deserve to be counted among the actor's best movies.
Ultimately, Sandler's Longest Yard is a worthy remake and companion piece to the Reynolds film; while many audiences may still be celebrating The Revenge of the Sith or anticipating a trip to Madagascar, Sandler and co. execute a comic quarterback sneak, scoring one of the summer's unlikeliest victories before the competition is even properly underway.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: The Longest Yard (2005)
Like Dozen, The Longest Yard is about horrible men finding a little redemption as they bond on a hopeless mission — with Reynolds in the Lee Marvin role as the cynical, mordantly funny leader who thinks rules are for sissies.
Now, with that out of the way: The brand-new remake of "The Longest Yard" is no "Longest Yard," if that makes any sense, but it's a definite crowd-pleaser and a perfectly fun night at the movies.
Putting an amiable but sort-of-toothless Adam Sandler in the Reynolds role (and a frail-looking Reynolds in the role of veteran prisoner Nate Scarborough), the remake shaves most of the raw edges off the original to create an almost family-friendly PG-13 entertainment.
