  VH1.com : Longpigs : Biography - Urge Music Downloads
Although they were signed to a major label just months after playing their first gig, the band were crushed when the label went under, especially since a new label would have to pay £500,000 to release them from their contract.
Their single "Far" hit the U.K. Top 40 in early 1996, followed by the Top 20 entry "On and On." Their debut album, The Sun Is Often Out, was released in the U.K. in April 1996, and in America less than one year later.
Longpigs toured with U2 as well, opening for the group on selected dates of their 1997 Popmart Tour.

The Longpigs are voiced by Crispin Hunt and rounded out by guitarist Richard Hawley, bassist Simon Stafford, and drummer Dee Boyle.
This is the kind of much I came to enjoy from the Longpigs on their debut album but in the context of this release it shines even brighter than it may have on The Sun is Often Out.
It seems the Longpigs were officially a tiny flash in the vast musical pan.

The Longpigs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Longpigs were a British band who rose to fame on the fringe of Britpop in the 1990s; comprising Crispin Hunt (vocals), Richard Hawley (guitar), Simon Stafford (bass) and former Cabaret Voltaire member Dee Boyle (drums).
Shortly after, the UK arm of the record label closed its doors leaving the Longpigs' future in doubt.
The Longpigs contract was purchased by U2's new record label, Mother Records.

To celebrate their return from two years in the wilderness, Longpigs have organised a "night of entertainment", with a '70s disco tune-mutilating transvestite as their opening act, and free absinthe behind the bar.
Despite all the innuendo and mirror-ball incandescence however, the Longpigs remain resolutely uncharismatic.
The Longpigs may not inspire either passionate love or hate.

The Longpigs first came to prominence in the U.K. in 1995, and this, their debut album showcases their incredible talents.
In between the opening chords of the first track and the closing drone of the hidden bonus song the Longpigs sketch out a landscape of distorted guitars, off-beat rhythms, gloriously impenetrable lyrics and impossibly high vocal lines that is uniquely their own.
Although the longpigs are now split up both albums are still worth buying as thier music does not seem to age.

The foursome (Crispin Hunt on vocals, Richard Hawley on guitar, Simon Stafford on bass, and Dee Boyle on drums) was forced to endure very little struggle on their way to a major label deal.
But in comparing the Longpigs to those two respected artists, it is important to note that the band is able to maintain their individuality with the occasional comparatively minor stumble.
This is the Longpigs at their most stripped down, and any band able to capture such energy and kinetics on tape gets my vote of confidence.

Sheffield's Longpigs have actually been around three years, but only escaped various record company problems to release their debut a year or so ago, now finally up for a Stateside release.
Slightly over to the rock end of the spectrum, Longpigs display enough style and originality to distinguish themselves from the pack, from the Radiohead-flavoured pop of "She Said" to the opener "Lost Myself", which starts out deceptively slowly, before exploding into a power-chord driven chorus.
Three years into the British indie rebirth, then, and bands like Longpigs are showing that there's still talent waiting to surface.

I first heard of the Longpigs a couple of years ago via a compilation tape which had a different version of your song, Jesus Christ.
It was a joint venture NME put out with Polydor to cross-pollinate some of the label's old stuff with the newer.
Where it ends up is anyone's guess but with all things considered you'd expect that life for the band, having already been threatened with extinction, has far more to offer yet.

Music: Boston Phoenix CD Reviews (The Boston Phoenix . 10-27-97)
U2 may have miscalculated the public's response to their "PopMart" tour, but they certainly didn't misjudge the potential of this Sheffield foursome -- one of the first acts signed to the band's Mother label.
The shimmery bounce of the La's-like "She Said" and the sashay-swagger of "Happy Again" (guitarist Richard Hawley does a great Mick Ronson here) are drawn in strong, vivid colors before the band begin to add glass-clear harmonies and an oceanic undercurrent of atmosphere.
Although it remains to be seen whether the Longpigs can break from the long shadows thrown by similar-sounding extravagant rockers like Suede and Radiohead, the group are certainly making a serious bid for the sun.

It's also the first Longpigs single to get the chart-thirsty two-part treatment: this first half has the non-album b-sides, and the half I haven't found has some live recordings.
The breakdown in the middle of "Too Many Sandwiches" is nicely restrained, and the freak-out at the end of the song is reassuringly frenetic, but otherwise I guess I don't see the point.

Critics tend to lump the Longpigs in with the bombastic genre of Britpop (much to Hunt's chagrin), though their sound is more like a hybrid of the stripped aesthetic of the Velvet Underground and the careful orchestration of the Beatles or early Echo and the Bunnymen.

Richard Hawley, (born Sheffield, England) is a critically acclaimed guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer.
Hawley initially found success as a member of Britpop band The Longpigs in the 1990s.
