Diana Krall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Love Scenes (1997) quickly became a hit record with the trio of Krall, Russell Malone (guitar) and Christian McBride (bass).
The Look of Love went to number one on the Canadian album charts and went quadruple platinum in that country.
Under his influence, she started to write and compose on her own; together they made an album, The Girl in the Other Room, which was released in April 2004 and quickly rose to the Top 5 in the UK and made the Australian top 40 album charts.

 A Closer Look: Larnelle:Unbelievable Love
God's endless love and grace are the album's theme, and Harris's rich, powerful pipes carry the message well-though the production, by two music producers whose credits include albums for pop stars Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, and Journey's vocalist Steve Perry occasional wraps Harris's vocals in too many strings and harmony vocals.
The album's title track sets the tone for the whole album, which alternates between foot-tapping anthems stuffed with background vocal choirs, succulent string sections, between a pounding pace and slower, more reflective ballads.
"He Loved Me with a Cross" closes the album with essentially the same message as the title song that opens the record, but Harris's approach this time is completely different.

The Look of Love Music at Shop Ireland
This album is stylish and a joy to listen to, perfect for cosy night's in or romantic dinners.
It is intersting to note a variety of opinions on this album - and I think the huge difference in opinions stems from a change of style from more 'traditional' jazz to 'mainstream', soft melodic type music.
Looked at as a complete CD, the Look of Love's late-night Latin mood becomes rather repetitive and may leave those fans who have been following her career for a few years yearning for some of the adventure and rhythmic variety which have characterised earlier efforts.

"The songs on the album are not all about sex and love lyrically," Michael says, "some mixes were chosen because of the sensuality of the rhythm and heaviness of the bass." The result is a lush sounding album that is erotic in it's sound, that takes a brave look at love lost and found.
The decision of which songs to release on the albums were not based solely on what were favorites, rather with what fit thematically on the albums.
Songs about sex and love which Michael recorded during that time and at other times, but were too far outside the feel or sonically were too different then everything else on the albums.

XTRAMSN: Diana Krall: The Look Of Love - the story
Love Scenes showcased her mastery of the romantic ballad while displaying her playful side with songs such as the Blossom Dearie tune "Peel Me A Grape." That album topped the Billboard jazz charts for most of 1998, earning Krall another GRAMMY nomination.
In 1999, she won a GRAMMY and became the first jazz artist in twenty-five years to be nominated in the Album of the Year category.
The Look of Love was a reunion for legends LiPuma and Ogerman, who hadn't worked together in over ten years.

I wanted to love it, but the line in the chorus, "Don't wanna woman; give me girls, girls, girls...," just wouldn't let me. I kept thinking it was a bit late in the 20th century for such sentiments but, at the same time, that the speaker was at least honest.
By this time, the album has made another convert, and the fact that this song gets a bit busy toward the end goes almost unnoticed in the overall smoothness.
The whole album is a good intro to the Speedboys and their irreverent and entertaining take on the musical scene.

On her earlier albums this was somewhat rescued by her obvious pianistic talents, but remove the vocals from the songs on this album and what you are left with is, as some others have observed...
I keep re-listening to her albums, including this one, desperately trying to find some indication that Diana is actually feeling any of the emotions conveyed by the lyrics of these songs at the same time that she's singing them, but have to admit I can't.
In this album, her piano-playing and her voice complement each other well, and the genius melding of the two is showcased wonderfully by the arrangements that show this off to an advantage.

This is an offbeat 47-song collection of Dusty Springfield's music, subtitled "Her Greatest Love Songs, which could seem a little redundant given the tenor of her overall output, but the set turns out to be full of surprises.
Along with a few chart entries, most of the well over two and a half hours of material here is focused on her album tracks and the lesser-known singles (even "I Only Want to Be With You" is represented by a more guitar-heavy, leaner alternate mix that puts her voice up further forward).
Disc one jumps between "The Look of Love" from 1966, "Brand New Me" from the early '70s, "Love Me By Name" from the late '70s, and "Goin' Back" from 1966, leaping across the map between songs separated by decades, and that's just in the first ten minutes.

Amazon.co.uk: The Look of Love: The Very Best of ABC: Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Of course, their biggest hits were "The Look of Love" and "Poison Arrow," but my personal favorites are the Chic-inspired "The Night You Murdered Love," "King Without a Crown," "Vanity Kills," and the housed-up "One Better World." These songs may not have been huge hits in America, but they're just as good.
In addition, we get two previously unreleased tracks: "Peace and Tranquility" and the killer ballad "Blame." This album is certainly an improvement over their previous compilation "Absolutely ABC," which had a rather awful and pointless remix of "The Look of Love." But here, we get all the original singles, digitally remastered with care.
Whoever compiled this album was clever enough to realise that ABC's "show-style" pop of the early and mid-80s has worn a LOT better than the later sub-housey stuff.

I'm more of a ABC casual fan than you, Todd, but I do think The Lexicon Of Love is a near-perfect album, certainly one of the best of the '80s.
I'm one who would have loved to have found a Lexicon of Love II, although I also loved Beauty Stab.
Actually the album that followed "Beauty Stab"(I loved "That Was Then, But This Is Now"), "How To Be A Zillionaire" is their next best album to their first.

Diana Krall :The Look of Love (cont'd)
Interestingly, the three tracks on Look of Love that were recorded at the Capitol Studios in Hollywood (Sinatra's old haunt) are all Latin-tinged numbers which provide just the right level of rhythmic propulsion in the laid-back groove to make them credible.
However, I have to believe that the intent here was to create a program of romantic mood music, and Krall and her compatriots have done that very successfully.
The Look of Love will no doubt be on a lot of CD players this fall and winter, as essential to a romantic evening as a roaring fire, a bevy of scented candles, and a chilled bottle of Skyy Citrus.

While there's no denying that jazz-pop star Diana Krall's movie-star good looks went a long way toward endearing her to mainstream America, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
This is apparent from the very beginning of THE LOOK OF LOVE, when Krall tackles the overly familiar Gershwin chestnut "S'Wonderful" not the way countless jazz singers have done in preceding decades, but in a style influenced by Joao Gilberto, who recorded the tune years before in a simmering bossa nova mode.
Most of the songs here have been trotted out countless times by Krall's contemporaries and (especially) predecessors, but her thoughtful phrasing and low-key dynamic shifts match her unhurried, pastel piano style on each tune to bring out something special at the song's core.

Stripes' 'Elephant' -- unforgettable music / Album takes raw, powerful look at love
The White Stripes dedicate their fourth album to "the death of the sweetheart," and it is in fact a hard look at love and all the ways it can go wrong.
Singer-guitarist Jack White's songwriting has a newly disillusioned bite: On 2001's "White Blood Cells," he fell in love with a girl and longed to "get married in a big cathedral by a priest"; on "Elephant," he confesses that "Love really bores me" and suggests his sweetheart hit the road and pray it doesn't hit back.
The White Stripes have crafted their most sonically and thematically cohesive album yet and laced it with the irresistible power of conviction.

In the hands of a lesser country artist, an album completely comprised of pop ballads could have been a disaster, but Roger Miller managed to make an album that's very well done and classy, though not one of his most creative ventures, by any means.
