Scottish Placenames - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Historians in Edmonton speculate that the name of this neighbourhood may commemorate either Ellerslie/Elderslie House (believed to be the birthplace of William Wallace, the medieval Scots patriot) or a character in one of Sir Walter Scott's novels.
Edmonton historians have put forward at least four theories on the origin of this neighbourhood's name, including the possibility that it may simply be a variation of Carlton.
Nevertheless, Edmonton's placenames illustrate the far-reaching effects of the Scottish diaspora of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
