Lord Howe of Aberavon is one of those Conservatives for whom the Tory Party is undoubtedly a less comfortable place than it used to be.
Howe's resignation speech in the Commons is generally credited with starting the immediate chain of events that culminated in the next departure from cabinet being that of the prime minister herself.
Howe is a supporter of Britain in Europe, the campaign founded to promote the case for UK entry into the single European currency.

In an age-old tradition, Lord Irvine took two paces away from his seat on the Woolsack before answering questions to demonstrate that he was stepping aside from his role as presiding officer in the Lords and was replying as a cabinet minister.
The exchanges in the Lords came after Liberal Democrat peer Lord McNally had tabled a parliamentary question asking whether "the role of lord chancellor is compatible with that of a party fundraiser".

Born in Port Talbot, South Wales, in 1926, Lord Howe was educated at Winchester College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
He was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1952, was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1965 and elected a Bencher of this Inn in 1969.

On July 2, the House of Lords select committee on the Constitutional Reform bill published its report.
For the past three months, Professor Andrew Le Sueur has been the committee’s specialist adviser, providing the 16 lords with impartial advise about issues relating to the bill’s proposals to abolish the office of Lord Chancellor, set up a new Supreme Court for the UK and reform judicial appointments in England and Wales.
Professor Le Sueur said “it’s been a fascinating experience to sit around a table twice a week with the committee members, including Lord Falconer (the Lord Chancellor), Lord Howe of Aberavon (Geoffrey Howe), and Lord Lloyd of Berwick (the retired law lord).
