Yet, while the film may not be the filmed equivalent of the books, it is to Ralph Bakshi's credit that he opens the film up into something dramatic, instead of just operating a Tolkien travelogue.
The film was not well-received by Tolkien fans, but the Tolkien cult is such that one suspects nothing ever would be.

Based on the first book-and-a-half of J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring, three-tome Lord of the Rings cycle, animator Ralph Bakshi's 1978 film is itself a time-tested classic.
Although the film's title encompasses the entire Tolkien trilogy, this longish Bakshi feature, in fact, covers only the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring, and the first half of the second, The Two Towers.
Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi's literal adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is brought to the screen in a reverent, stilted way, with Bakshi forsaking his sharp-edged animated looniness for a rotoscoped dullness.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The major event of "Towers" is the battle of Helm's Deep, in which Aragorn, Gimli the dwarf (Rhys-Davies) and elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom) join the horselords of Rohan in a seemingly doomed fight against Saruman's army of 10,000 Uruk-hai, Orcs and Easterlings.
All of the returning characters continue to evolve, including an outright mystical sequence showing the Eldar/Edain union and future of elf Arwen (Liv Tyler) and human Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), which the filmmakers went to the appendix of "Rings" to find for the midway point of the whole work.
But "Towers" has many battles, starting with the opening sequence of Gandalf (Ian McKellen) locked in combat with the fiery Balrog, from the first film, in a dazzling plunge into the depths of the Earth.
