  The Loyal Edmonton Regiment ... Unofficially
Raised at the outbreak of WWI as the 49th Battalion, the Regiment served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe.
Renamed The Edmonton Regiment in March of 1920, the Eddies became the Loyal Eddies while serving overseas with the allied army in WWII.
Today The Loyal Edmonton Regiment is the only remaining militia infantry unit (R031) in Edmonton, perpetuating the 101st, the 63rd, the 51st and 49th Battalions.

C. Atkin, President of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Foundation, thanked Council for its support (and that of prior Councils), in particular, for its most recent support in the establishment of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Museum and the Prince of Wales Armoury.
The Loyal Edmonton Regiment veterans presented each member of Council with a framed replica of the regimental colours (including one for the family of Late Councillor D. Mather).
Edmonton received a rating of 5 blooms, the highest designation, with special recognition on the efforts of preservation and the highest mark being in the category of community involvement.

Lt-Colonel Jefferson's Loyal Edmonton Regiment and a Squadron of tanks from the Three Rivers Regiment formed the vanguard, headed for the next large town, Piazza Armerina.
The Toronto regiment was to launch its final approach on Valguarnera from a ridge two-miles south of the town, but when the Highlanders arrived they found the ridge to be strongly held by the Germans.
The Loyal Eddies loaded up their ammunition, food and water as well as the 3-inch mortars and medium machine-guns of the supporting Saskatoon Light Infantry on to pack mules and headed into dry river valley.

The Loyal Edmonton Regiment and the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment were relentless and suffered heavy casualties.
Through dust and the acrid smell of cordite, the Loyal Edmonton soldiers were involved in one of the fiercest battle so far.
The victory was a costly one: the Loyal Edmonton Regiment had 172 casualties, including 63 killed; the Seaforth Highlanders 103, including 41 killed.

The 49th Battalion Pipes and Drums is a re-enactment of the historical pipe band originally established in The 49th Battalion in 1915, before that unit went overseas.
In the spirit of paying tribute to the tradition of Edmonton's military pipe bands, the band wears the badge of the pipe band of the 1st Battalion, The Edmonton Regiment, established in 1920.
The band is made up entirely of serving members of The Loyal Edmonton Regiment, a present-day militia unit whose members are proud to wear the "49" on their cap badge.

Mother and baby arrived at Pier 21 on 12 August 1946 and were quickly transferred to the care of the Red Cross for a train journey to Edmonton, Alberta.
On June 28th 1943, with his Loyal Edmonton Regiment he sailed from Scotland to join other allied invasion forces for the landing on Sicily on 10th July 1943.
After participating in the Italian campaign during all of 1944, along with his regiment he was transferred to Holland in the spring of 1945.

 L/Cpl Maurice D. White - Veterans Affairs Canada
Maurice White was born January 2, 1925 in Coldwater, Ontario, but raised in Grassland, Alberta, one of 16 children of farmers Alexander and Velma.
His duties with the "Loyal Eddies" included radio operator, company clerk, scout, runner and section leader.
He recalls the bad weather the day of the Sicily landings: "Was not sure we would make it," he notes.

In the spirit of recreating the original band, The 49th Battalion Pipes and Drums began recruiting from amongst the serving infantrymen of The Loyal Edmonton Regiment in May 2003.
The band is not funded by the Regiment or the Canadian Forces, and band activities are separate from Regimental duties, as band members are volunteers and are not paid to play.
Members also wear the rank insignia in effect during World War I, and the hat badge of the pipe band of the 1st Battalion, The Edmonton Regiment, from 1920.

 `Freedom' for the regiment - This Is Lancashire
THE flags were flying when more than 100 soldiers from the First Battalion of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment brought Blackburn centre to a halt as they marched to celebrate their Freedom of the Borough.
Blackburn Mayor Coun John Williams saw the regiment mark its right to "march through the town with bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying".
The event was the first official engagement of the new Colonel of the regiment, Brigadier Geoff Sheldon, who took the salute.

 Cloth Shoulder Titles - Infantry - 1939-1945 Regiments named A to N
At the outbreak of war, only four units of the Canadian Army were permitted to wear cloth shoulder titles; by tradition Guards Regiments of the British Army wore white on scarlet cloth titles, and so too did the Canadian Grenadier Guards and the Governor General's Foot Guards.
Badges of European manufacture were usually of inferior quality, with thicker thread, crude materials, and as the war progressed, embroidered badges were phased out in England in favour of printed canvas versions.
When the Regiment was informed that their special metal oak leaf badges could not be worn on battle dress (see the page on Special Distinctions) the Regiment adopted a title in cloth incorporating oak leaf design.

 Lance Corporal Maurice White - Veterans Affairs Canada
At age two he relocated to Grassland, Alberta, where his family established the farm he grew up on with his six brothers and nine sisters.
He enlisted in Edmonton on January 7, 1942, and was assigned to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.
White served in Italy for two years and was part of the initial invasion force in Sicily.
