Topic: The Lure of the Basilisk

  Fantasy Monsters
It is said by some that the basilisk is the living incarnation of the god of death, and that it exists to spread death and destruction in the world.
Basilisks are amazingly poisonous; their breath has been known to wither plants after only a few hours of contact, and the fumes are also toxic to animals, causing a raw throat, burning eyes, and irritated skin.
The basilisk's venom is a contact poison which penetrates the skin and enters the blood within one turn; it has full effect within 5-10 seconds.

 The Lure of the Basilisk
The Lure of the Basilisk is the first volume in the four-part ''The Lords of Dus'' series.
Basilisk didn't come back, but after a couple more months I decided it must've gotten lost, and I was never going to make it as a writer and I'd better find another way to make a living.
The Lure of the Basilisk was first published March 1980 by Del Rey Books, ISBN 0-345-28624-3, as a mass-market paperback original.

The Lure of the Basilisk: Review
The Lure of the Basilisk by Lawrence Watt-Evans
The Lure of the Basilisk, his first book, does more than take you to its fantasy world.
It will take you to the moment when a coming professional writer didn't yet know he would ever be established, when a Ring of Power set the standard he would have to meet, and when a Princeton degree meant no more to him than being a teller of stories.

 Forgotten Lore: Cluster Decks
We'll start with Lure, a green creature enchantment which forces all creatures that can to block the creature enchanted by Lure, and Thicket Basilisk, a green 2/4 creature which causes all creatures that it blocks or which block it to be destroyed at the end of combat.
When playing this deck, the basic strategy is to use a creature enchanted with Lure, ideally the Basilisk, to draw away all of the opponent's blockers (preferably destroying those creatures with the Basilisk's "gaze of destruction") and to then deal damage to your opponent with your other, unblocked attacking creatures.
Rescuing the Basilisk using Elvish Scout, which can be tapped to untap an attacking creature you control, works much better – like Fog, the Scout prevents a creature from dealing damage during combat, but it only affects one of your creatures.

The basilisk was the mythical king of the serpents and symbolised the devil.
Griffins were said to kill serpents and basilisks, both embodiments of evil, thus protecting mankind.
Those who condemn the Rowling adventures do so on the grounds of protecting their children from witchcraft and the lure of the devil.

The egg was spherical and covered by a thick membrane, and sometimes it was hatched by a toad or serpent, who sat on it for nine years (another fallacy involving the nine years span).
Accordingly, anyone who sought to slay the basilisk was wise to carry a mirror, so that it would kill itself with its own look.
It is possible that it was ancient travelers' tales of the crowing crested cobra that originally gave rise to the myth of the basilisk — but it is unlikely that we shall ever discover whether this theory is true or not.

Garth journeys to Mormoreth on his warbeast Koros, and on the way there is waylaid by bandits, who he defeats in battle and from whom he gains magical treasures that will help him defeat the wizard Shang, whom the bandits tell him is the ruler of the citty of Mormoreth.
At the gates of Mormoreth, he meets Shang, who tells him that he may pass, but must not bring the creature, a deadly basilisk, outside the gates.
Garth journeys to the crypts, and through his ingenuity captures the basilisk, which he brings back to Skelleth, but unfortunately, the baron wants the basilisk for himself, and thus Garth attempts to recapture it.

Lawrence Watt-Evans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After graduating from Bedford High School in Bedford, MA, he attended Princeton University but left without a degree.
He began to seriously try to sell his writing during a break in his college career, but sold nothing significant until he produced The Lure of the Basilisk in 1978 (published 1980) and thereupon began writing full time.
He initially marketed his work under other names; it was the editor of his first novel, Lester Del Rey, who first demanded he use his real name and then created the pseudonym Lawrence Watt-Evans.

 EN World - Morrus' D&D / d20 News & Reviews Site - new construct - Fascinatrix
I think this is the DandD equivalent of the old Magic: The Gathering tactic of putting Lure on a Basilisk with Regeneration.
The heavily armed and armored Fascinatrix is used to draw enemy troops to itself, much like the Harpy uses its song to lure sailors to their doom.
Although it is usually placed to take advantage of natural hazards (so that troops will toss themselves into ravines or canyons), there are any number of strategic placements for a Fascinatrix, and it can just as easily puree enemies that get close to it.

He left Princeton before he received his degree and produced a fantasy novel, The Lure of the Basilisk, which sold readily to Del Rey Books, beginning his career as a full-time writer.
It was followed by three sequels and the series for which he is best known, the Ethshar fantasy series.
