The 10 Scariest Games of All time
Horror is the psychological terror of Stephen King and the gruesome carnage of Clive Barker.
A good horror film is the equivalent of a two-hour roller coaster ride; a good horror game must whisper for your return to the monitor, regardless of the time of day.
The Lurking Horror was the first of many computer games to be loosely built around Lovecraftian themes (Shadow of the Comet and, of course, Alone in the Dark being two other notable examples).

 Anchorhead review
There's a certain skill to writing horror fiction: the author has to know how to build suspense in such a way that the story is interesting throughout.
Part of the reason is that the story revolves around the relationship between the PC and her husband, which comes alive as much as any relationship between two IF characters in memory--and much of the progress of the story is marked by changes in that relationship.
Horror writing can easily lose its force over the course of a story; the author has to strain to come up with fresh grotesqueries that shock or terrify in new and different ways.

Lurking Horror Review - Adventure Lantern
The Lurking Horror is a very good game, which uses a mature, though still quite limited, version of the Infocom parser, and manages to infuse the player with an (admittedly false) sense of true freedom.
Mind you, and that’s one of my minor Lurking Horror gripes, that at times it’s just not clear what you’re supposed to be doing.
The game’s box is an impressive and very physical beginning in your immersion in the world of Lurking horror (you even get a disgusting little red plastic bug-worm hybrid), which will only intensify when you read some excellent prose that is dramatically connected to very well thought-of sounds, eerie chants, screeches and unexpected bangs.

William P. Robertson's LURKING IN PENNSYLVANIA book review
Three decades is a long time to wait for a book, but Bill Robertson has finally collected all his stories together, added some poems and decorated it all with his own photographs.
In his introduction he writes: “I’ve lived most of my life amidst the wild beauty of rural northwest Pennsylvania where hillsides choked with oak and hemlock create bleak tableaux that adversely affect one’s psyche”.
The seventeen short stories in this book were written in a horror tradition that has almost disappeared these days.

As a fan of horror films (the intelligent kind, not those that just equate enormity with buckets of tomato-sauce gore) I am often let down by the lack of decent videogames that are actually scary.
It seems, the survival horror ilk in particular are not that frightening, usually because they overload the game with slow moving zombies that pose no real threat to a player.
However, a class of horror film that has come increasingly to the fore in the past decade, with the likes of the Scream films and their many contemporaries, is the teen horror.

 Obscure - ESCMag Review
Horror has long been a staple of gaming, from early masterpieces like Infocom's The Lurking Horror (plus weaker fare like Crypt of Media for Apple II and the Friday the 13th / Nightmare on Elm Street adaptations for C64) to the recent Resident Evil and Silent Hill installments.
That last genre, the teen horror film, was rescued by the ironic Scream series and has since wandered back into play-it-serious territory.
I can heartily recommend this one to horror fans, in the hopes that Hydravision creates a sequel (come on, every horror title has to have at least one sequel) that's actually feature length.

Lovecraftian horror - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lovecraftian horror is a sub-genre of horror which emphasizes the psychological horror of the unknown (in some cases, unknowable) over gore or other elements of shock, which may still be present.
The "horror" features of Lovecraft's stories tend to involve semi-gelatinous substances, such as slime, as opposed to standard horror tropes such as blood, bones, or corpses.
With the advent of film, Lovecraftian horror truly became a sub-genre, fueling not only direct adaptations of Poe and Lovecraft, but providing the foundation upon which many of the horror films of the 1950s and 1960s were constructed.
