The MTA Song - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MTA Song, often called Charlie on the MTA, is a song from the 1940s about a man trapped on Boston's subway system (then known as the MTA and now known officially as the MBTA and colloquially as the T).
The song is so well-known in Boston that the MBTA's "Easy Way" card-based fare collection system, which will replace the traditional token system in 2006, has been officially nicknamed the "CharlieCard" in homage to this song.
The song, based on a much older tune called The Ship that Never Returned (or its railroad successor, Wreck of the Old 97), was written in 1948 as part of the re-election campaign of Walter A. O'Brien, a Progressive Party candidate for mayor of Boston.

The first part of the list is two-chord songs, using the 1 and 5 (G and D7 if you're in G. For the key of C, use C and G or G7).
It's helpful to know that almost all songs start and end with the I chord, and that the next-to-last chord is almost always V. See if your ear can tell you when to change chords and which chord to change to.
Note: Most of these songs can be played with an 8-note bluegrass-style roll (waltz time songs are an exception), so when you are able to change chords on a song smoothly, try substituting a roll for the simple strum you've been doing.

Before Henry Clay Work named the tall standing clock in his song Grandfather's Clock, those types of clocks were known as case clocks, coffin clocks, standing clocks, upright clock, long clocks, etc. It was only after the tune was written that they became known as Grandfather Clocks.
Among his tunes are "Marching Through Georgia" and the nineteenth century hit, "The Ship That Never Returned." This tune inspired a re-working of the lyrics in "The Train That Never Returned," which inspired the tune "The Wreck of the Old '97." "The Wreck of the Old '97" is ever popular among fiddlers.
The Kingston Trio borrowed the tune by Work and added a melodic bridge in a further re-working of the original idea of "The Ship That Never Returned" which was called "The MTA Song." This song tells the story of Charley who rides a non-stop subway and just keeps on going round and round the system.

The system will be called the "CharlieCard", in reference to the 1940's Boston political song, Charlie on the MTA.
The song concerns a man named Charlie, who paid ten cents to get on the T, but didn't have the change to pay the five cent exit fare - a hot political issue at the time.
