 The Lard Biscuit: Madness
Madness is one of the most successful singles bands in the history of the British charts, and they have recorded many albums' worth of entertaining and intelligent pop music.
Madness became a huge sensation in England, but it seemed their style was too eccentric and too British to make a dent in the U.S. music scene.
Following the "Our House" era, Madness was beginning to get tired of being "nutty." The members of the band had grown weary of being perceived as the cheeky clowns of the British pop charts, and they wanted to have their music taken more seriously.

But Warning is what started it all for me. Take a gander at "Warning," "Take Hold of the Flame," or the downward spiral into lunacy they call "Roads to Madness" and you will see exactly what I am talking about.
Clearly the banner track of THE WARNING is the rock angst anthem "Take Hold Of The Flame." The epic "Roads To Madness" features chilling orchestration by Michael Kamen who was hand-picked by the band due to their admiration of his work on Pink Floyd's THE WALL
Not counting the EP they put out before this, this debut album from progressive metal masters is simply incredible.

Although Madness was able to stay near the top of the charts with their first post-Barson release, "Michael Caine," the band's fortunes began to decline over the course of 1984.
In January of 1982, Madness hit number four with a cover of Labi Siffre's "It Must Be Love." In March, their streak of Top Ten hits was interrupted when "Cardiac Arrest" stalled at number 14 on the charts, due to radio's reluctance to play the tune.

The entire process of scoring "A Page of Madness" has been a challenge for the band, which performs their original music for the Japanese masterpiece as part of the film festival along with a screening of the movie on April 23 at the Castro Theatre.
In "A Page of Madness," a wildly demented woman seems to literally bounce off the walls of her cell as images of rain, trees and shadows dance across the scene in equally manic abandon.
Nonetheless, "A Page of Madness" stands out as one of the rare surviving Japanese silents, thanks to the fact that Kinugasa hid a print in a rice barrel during World War II and forgot about it until he found it in the early '70s.
