Breathing the Æther - The Æon Editors' WebLog
Back when Kris was the (award-winning) editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (from 1991-1997), her editorial feature for that magazine was consistently rated as the readers' favorite content.
Her Æon column will range from science to society to literature, and perhaps even venture back around to look at literature's influence on society and science.
She has, however, gained in experience and accomplishments in those years, published a lot of unforgettable short fiction ("The Gallery of His Dreams" -- Asimov's September '91 -- still haunts me), and dozens of novels -- fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and horror -- Kris doesn't give much weight to boundaries in her writing.

The fantasy is usually quite good, tending more toward humorous light fantasy than heroic sword-and-sorcery but some of the latter also shows up.
The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction is the gold standard in its genres (which are broader than the title might initially seem to suggest--there are all kinds of Fantasy and Science Fiction--and this magazine also features some horror from time to time).

The ending was a bit off, which is one of the reasons I feel this will eventually be a part of something larger, but for the most part, I liked it a lot.
I think my only real complaint with the story is that rather than have the narrator use the framework of telling his story to a classroom full of kids, it would’ve been better to experience what he experienced in “real time”.

They also seemed to go on the usual assumption in dealing with s/f or fantasy that, being such, it doesn't have to make sense, so the initial episode was clearly one that came later, essentially plopping the viewer into a situation that had already been set up.
The second episode was the first of a two-parter, which did include the expository material, for some reason being done as a flashback told by the resident wizard.
