Guardian | Big screen Magic Roundabout turns to Bill Nighy for Dylan role
Bill Nighy will be the big-screen voice of the Magic Roundabout character who, more than any other, prompted endless late-night, student-flat conversations on marijuana references inherent in children's television of the 60s and 70s.
The Magic Roundabout was created for French television by Serge Danot in the mid-60s, but it was the supposedly drug-laden references in the script used on this side of the channel that propelled it to fame and affection.
The Magic Roundabout ran from 1965 to 1977 on BBC1 and was revived by Channel 4 in the 90s, when all the voices were provided by Nigel Planer.

The Magic Roundabout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Le Manège Enchanté (known in English as The Magic Roundabout) was a children's television programme created in France in 1963 by Serge Danot.
A 2005 film adaptation was made using modern computer animation which adopted the French approach of each character having its own voice rather than using a narrator.
In 1975 Jasper Carrott recorded a short, risqué comic monologue, parodying The Magic Roundabout, which was released on a single as the B-side of his comic song "Funky Moped".

The Magic Roundabout / Doogal / Dave Borthwick / 2005 / film review
The Magic Roundabout was the brain child of a Frenchman, Serge Danot.
The film adaptation does not have anything like this individuality — it is just another glorious feast of 3D CGI animation, with little to distinguish it from the countless other glorious feasts of 3D CGI animation that are fighting for our attention.
For both the British and French releases of the film, the characters are voiced by some very big-name actors and personalities, although this failed to prevent the film from being an immense flop.

Movie Review - Magic Roundabout, The - eFilmCritic   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Magic Roundabout is the big screen version of the beloved 50s/60s stop motion TV series for children of the same name.
Granted, the whole thing is just a chase film with some flimsy excuses for set pieces thrown in, but what matters is that The Magic Roundabout still has its heart in the right place.
Any film adaptation of material like this is always going to be derided for deviating too far from its source; but making a 90 minute film about a dog that loses a hat would not make for the most enthralling cinema experience.

The Magic Roundabout | film reviews | musicOMH.com
The original series was a firm favourite of ‘70s children and a little later became a cult hit with students - who drew their own less innocent interpretations from the psychedelic imagery in the show - so a feature, 40 years on, has a lot to live up to for an older audience.
It is also strictly for younger children as older kids searching for credibility among their peers may find the cute characters a little babyish and the plot too simplistic.
The Magic Roundabout is an enchanting adventure that will capture the imaginations of small kids everywhere.

I'd watched the original Magic Roundabout from a very young age, and one false step could have ruined both versions for good.
However, the filmmakers managed to make a perfect balance of "old" and "new" to bring out a whole new film, featuring characters that reminded me of the originals, but didn't try to take their places.
The storyline was fun, bearing in mind that it was aimed at young children, and included the token jokes (aimed at both children and adults), teary moments and interesting yet predictable twists.

Dougal is accompanied on his quest by his friends Brian the Snail (Jim Broadbent), Dylan the seemingly stoned rabbit (Bill Nighy) and Ermintrude the singing cow (Joanna Lumley), with occasional appearances by spring-loaded wizard Zebedee (Ian McKellen).
It’s worth noting that a feature-length movie was never going to be that similar to the TV show, as each episode was only five minutes long, though the plot does seem to have been written with one eye on the inevitable video-game tie-in.
In short, The Magic Roundabout is an enjoyable family film that will delight young audiences and is liable to send nostalgic 30-somethings on a (sadly, futile) quest to find the original series on DVD.

What seemed entirely appropriate as a batch of fuzzy, quaint, fleeting episodes has been pumped full of pixels, cross-bred with the modern action-adventure movie and decorated with references, both verbal and musical, that can only be there for baby boomers lured back by nostalgia.
