The Man Who Never Was - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Man Who Never Was is a 1954 book by Ewen Montagu and a 1956 2nd World War war film based on the book.
The real name of the person/body remained secret, but in 1997 it was claimed that he was a homeless Welsh alcoholic named Glyndwr Michael, who had committed suicide by eating rat poison.
The body was buried as "William Martin" in a cemetery in Huelva, Spain.

The deception team first thought that the documents would have to be recovered from a man who died due to an unopened parachute, as Cholmondeley had proposed.
Through the most discreet inquiries they were able to secure the body of a 34-year old man who recently died of chemically-induced pneumonia as the result of ingesting rat poison.
Since the man died of pneumonia, the fluid in his lungs would be consistent with that of a man who had been at sea for an extended period.

Never Man Spake Like This Man
Never is the note of authority lacking, as often it would be if He were other than "the Lord of all"; for no pretender could possibly keep his sayings on the superlatively high level that would be necessary in order to support such a claim.
It far transcends the ability of man to create an imaginary character, and to cause him to speak on all occasions and under all circumstances in such words as exclude all suggestion of the sinful infirmities that are common to mankind.
But to those who would follow Him He speaks not only of tribulation and sufferings as their portion in this life, but also of glory and honor and eternal blessedness in the life to come; and in this too He spake as never man spake.

The documentary is based on 14 years of research by Colin Gibbon, a former policeman, who believes the body used by British intelligence belonged to Tom Martin, an unmarried sailor who was one of 379 men killed when the aircraft carrier Dasher exploded off the Scottish coast.
Mr Gibbon made the link between Able Seaman Martin and "the man who never was" by following clues left behind by Ewen Montagu, the brilliant intelligence officer in charge of the elaborate deception, codenamed Operation Mincemeat.
Mr Gibbon noticed that the sailor shared a surname with the false identity given to "the man who never was".

The Man Who Never Was - The True Story of Glyndwr Michael
, the body of a dead man was kept on ice in a London mortuary for an uncertain period of time, and then dressed in the uniform of a Royal Marines Major and given a false identity.
In 1953 came the publication of the book by Lieutenent Commander Ewen E. Montagu, "The Man Who Never Was", described by Roger Morgan in issue #54 of "After The Battle" as the first semi-official revelation about "Operation Mincemeat".
Thomas John Michael, the father of Glyndwr Michael, had been dead and buried long before 1943, and we can only suppose that, as Montagu had a cameo role in the 1956 film of his book, "The Man Who Never Was", the British Intelligence community had a major influence on the final script.

DVD Verdict Review - The Man Who Never Was
The Man Who Never Was is based on the book of the same name, written by Lieutenant Commander Ewan Montagu about a fascinating plot that he spearheaded—one that played a significant role in the Allied victory in World War II.
Wisely, the film keeps the emphasis on the story; the performances, led by Clifton Webb (Laura) in an uncharacteristically low-key turn as Montagu, are straightforward, never threatening to steal focus from the intellectual maneuverings.
The film even honors the desire of the dead man's family to keep his identity confidential; the camera respectfully averts its eye from the dead man's face throughout the film, and avoids any sensational shots of the corpse being prepared for its work.

William Wyler was so impressed with Boyd’s performance in The Man Who Never Was that he asked Fox to lend him out and cast him for the now famous role of Messala in the 1959 remake of the epic film opposite Charlton Heston.
Boyd chose his roles based solely on character development and the value of the story that was told to the public, and never based on monetary compensation or peer pressure.
It is a real shame to see that a man who was so passionate about his work, who wanted nothing but to tell a story with character, a man who was ahead of his time in many ways ended up being overlooked by many of his peers.

A real beauty of a true story provides the basis for The Man Who Never Was, a gripping World War II picture that has no combat scenes, no great vistas of troops.
The solution is simple but ingenious: a dead man's body will be left in the sea to float ashore on the coast of Spain; made to look like a British pilot, he will be carrying papers suggesting an Allied attack on Greece.
Other than that, director Ronald Neame brings his steady, classy approach to bear on a good yarn, and saves special grace for the treatment of the unfortunate dead man who unwittingly loaned his body to a stunt that saved hundreds, if not thousands, of lives.

There are no kids around and Webb doesn't unbend, but this movie doesn't care that much about the personal life of its characters, anyway, save for poor Gloria Grahame, who's given the rather thankless task of shedding some plot-directed tears and seems rather out of place for her troubles.
THE MAN WHO NEVER WAS is a fine, thoughtful film that should appeal to those who aren't necessarily great fans of action war movies.
