Abaxial Cameras :: The Man Who Skied Down Everest
There is no limit in my admiration for the man, and (fortunately for my wife) no way in the world you could get me to emulate him.
The man in question is Yuichiro Miura, poet, adventurer and world champion skier (he set a speed record).
The film follows his audacious attempt to ski down the upper slopes of Everest.

He planned to ski some 8,000 feet down an icy glacier at a 40 to 45 degree angle...
This 1975 film is rarely shown and with the apparent decline of skiing interest in the United States a film such as this one certainly can excite people about the sport.
While the actual footage of Miuras descent on his skis is short in length the film essentially is about the determination of an individual to achieve a goal that seems both challenging and unrealistic.

dOc DVD Review: The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1975) - Printable
The Man Who Skied Down Everest, winner of the Academy Award for best documentary in 1975, captures the arduous trek, mixing narration (read by Douglas Rain) based on Miura's diary amidst scenes of harsh panoramic beauty.
It is the visual scope of The Man Who Skied Down Everest that is its strength, and not Miura's seemingly mad plan to risk life and limb to slide down a sheet of rocky ice at the top of the world.
Miura's actual ski run is what the The Man Who Skied Down Everest builds to, though in hindsight it is almost an anti-climax, as the quest became stained with human death, making this questionable act of extreme sporting seem sadly pointless.
