The Man in the Iron Mask Movie Review
The Man in the Iron Mask was a real prisoner, held in the dark confines of the Bastille, but to this day, his identity has remained a mystery.
In "The Man in the Iron Mask", Dumas conjectures that this unknown prisoner was in fact the twin brother of King Louis XIV, the unfortunate victim of a royal power struggle, and it is with the help of the four Musketeers that he seeks to reclaim his throne.
Aramis (Jeremy Irons of "Chinese Box") has returned to his Jesuit roots, and D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne, last seen in "Smilla's Sense of Snow") is now Captain of the Musketeers, charged with guarding his self-serving King from all threats.

1939 The Man in the Iron Mask - Movie reviews, trailers, clips and stills
DiCaprio mostly acts through his expressive eyes--cold and steely for Louis, doe-like and imploring for Phillippe--to carry his performing end, although a few actorly flourishes, notably his poignant unveiling from the mask, suggest that his many admirers are on the right track for embracing DiCaprio as a James Dean-style icon for the millennium.
Iron Mask's real pleasures come from its old-pro ensemble, with Gabriel Byrne heading the roster as a properly brooding D'Artagnan who eventually reveals why he's so devoted to Louis' louse ("Fatherhood is a blessing I can only imagine," he foreshadows).
The Man in the Iron Mask boasts enough sturdy storytelling to get by, although it's obvious that this remake's raison d'etre is to entertain the female legions of DiCaprio's titanic fan club.

The Man in the Iron Mask completed Alexandre Dumas' Musketeer trilogy, which was serialized in the press and immensely popular between 1844 and 1850.
Therefore it is with a heavy heart that I tell you that the movie aiming to jump-start this exciting genre is the miserably deficient The Man in the Iron Mask.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK movie review, In Film Australia
The Man in the Iron Mask is one of those indulgent, corrosively funny films with one liners that send cheers from the audience and genuinely pointless scenes that receive sniggers and snorts a’ plenty.
Three of the four main musketeers (Irons, Malkovich, Depardieu) that faithfully served his father decide that they have had enough of Louis’ evil ways, and devise a scheme to replace the King and bring justice to the people of France.
The Man in the Iron Mask is at times a reasonably entertaining film, and if you’re excited about the promise of musketeers in shiny uniforms then you perhaps you will enjoy it a little (or a lot) more than I did.

With the inestimable acting talents of its first- rate cast and a script that allows for action, emotion, and humor in proper proportion, "The Man in the Iron Mask" is a far cry from the smarmy "Three Musketeers" movie released a few years ago by Disney.
Irons, Byrne and Malkovich are at the top of their form in this engrossing period piece, but Depardieu deserves special mention for his particularly vivacious performance.

The Man In The Iron Mask, 1998 movie review
The Man In The Iron Mask, 1998, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as King Louis XIV and his twin brother Philippe.
Philippe, separated from the royal family at his birth and raised in secret, does not know who he is. His father did not want his two sons to fight for the throne, so he sacrificed one by sending him away and pretending he never existed.
Later on, Philippe is locked up in Bastille, with an iron mask permanently affixed onto his head so that nobody ever sees his face and his striking resemblance to the king.

With Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and Gerard Depardieu as the trio of swordsmen, Gabriel Byrne as their pal D'Artagnan, and Leonardo DiCaprio as both King Louis XIV and the title character, no one can be accused of holding back in the casting department.
The closest "Mask" comes to a unifying tone is, unfortunately, one of raunchy comedy, with numerous crude jokes about sex and bodily functions intended to appeal to who knows who.
The ramifications of both events lead directly to that unhappy masked man and all manner of swordplay.

While still a fun movie, it should be noted that this is not the 1929 original "Iron Mask," but a reissued version created in 1952.
This is an interesting and fun movie, and the story more believable than many of today's rehashed versions of the alexander dumas classic (there's even a shot of all four musketeers in bed together like sardines - which caused a chuckle considering that the scene in todays Hollywood would have been excised very quickly).
I'd say the movie was released about the same time as sound recording emerged, and the movie re-edited to contain Fairbank's ongoing monologue - a voice that is still unique today.

"Iron Man" is as complex as its conflicted protagonist.
The first movie self-financed by Marvel Studios, it combines the thrills of a summer popcorn spectacular with the craftsmanship of a prestige picture.
Superheroes also need adoring girlfriends, and "Iron Man" has a keeper in the form of Virginia Potts, Stark's secretary and slowly thawing love interest, played with self-assured humor by Gwyneth Paltrow.
