BBC News | HEALTH | The man with two brains
A man whose brain was separated down the middle to treat epilepsy is helping scientists understand how the organ works.
The advantage of separating the two halves is that scientists can then ask each side to carry out different tasks - with no assistance from the other side.
The left hemisphere is always considered to be the part of the brain which develops some particularly human skills, such as language.

The corpus callosum acts as a bridge between the two hemispheres of your brain.
For more than a decade, Dartmouth neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga has followed the cognitive experiences of a man with severe epilepsy whose connection between his brain's two hemispheres was severed to stop his seizures.
The human brain has evolved over several million years to become the incredibly complex organ that it is in humans today.

Michael is transformed by love into a paragon of tender thoughtfulness, and the object of his affections is worthy in most respects, but the contortions he must go through to conduct the affair are ridiculous, made even funnier by a perverse logic.
Technically, ‘The Man With Two Brains’ has few frills and the DVD has none at all (unless you count basics like chapter search and closed-captioning for the deaf).
Some sequences in ‘The Man With Two Brains’ go on too long and others fall flat altogether, but the film has enough sturdy jokes and genuine deadpan weirdness -- as well as enthusiastic and capable performances -- to be an agreeable diversion.

The Man With Two Brains (1983)
Really, it was right around the time of 1983's The Man With Two Brains that the dominant opinion started to change, mainly because I think Martin had ceased to perform stand-up by that point; the more movies he made, the quicker memories of his "wild and crazy guy" routine and other bits faded.
When it succeeds, TMWTB does so largely due to the presence of Martin, who was still getting his feet wet in films; he'd made more than a few by that point but his persona still seemed bound to the stand-up comic of the Seventies, despite an attempt in 1981's Pennies From Heaven to alter that.
The Man With Two Brains appears an aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1 on this single-sided, single-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The only weak points of The Man with Two Brains are that the comedy is amusing rather than gut-wrenchingly funny (quite low-key, in fact) and that the characters are rather shallow.

Through his study of patients with hemispheric disconnection, also called "split brains," Michael Gazzaniga has discovered that the two sides of the brain interpret and organize information differently.
Using new brain imaging methods we want to see where that is occurring in the right hemisphere.
The demonstration in a split-brain person that one side of the brain preferentially responded to faces, the other to vegetables, was used to support the idea that the right side of the brain is primarily adapted for processing faces.
