Since man cannot score on jazz alone, some of Bernstein's more typical writing style makes itself apparent, notably during the lovely Molly, which subdues the main theme into a delicate string melody.

The only thing that makes The Man With The Golden Arm a thrilling drama is the skill with which its characters are drawn.
As fascinating a character study as this movie is (and, with the exception of a one-note, unfunny sidekick played by Arnold Stang, Golden Arm's characters are fully fleshed out), it's about half an hour too long.
Still, the vast majority of this movie is better than ninety percent of what's out there now, and if nothing else, The Man With The Golden Arm proves that drug stories aren't exclusively the territory of hip, nihilistic '90s film-school wunderkinder.

"The Man with the Golden Arm," directed by Otto Preminger, is my video antidote to all the saccharin-sweet fare on television during the holiday season.
Recent films such as "Requiem for a Dream" and "Trainspotting" provide more compelling examinations of heroin use, but "Golden Arm" merits a watch if for no other reason than to see how Preminger tackled drug abuse in the repressive 1950s.
