The Manchurian Candidate (2004) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
The Manchurian Candidate was directed by the terrific Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) whose last attempt at remaking a classic resulted in the dreadful The Truth About Charlie (an update of the wonderful Charade).
The Manchurian Candidate really loses something in the mid section and some of the updated elements are a little too obvious (such as one of the big enemies being a large corporation), but I was surprised how engrossed I was for much of the movie.
The Manchurian Candidate is far from perfect (the idea that behind every great man is his mother is a little silly--at least in this version) and as I previously stated, it pales in comparison to the original, but for the most part, I quite liked it.

 The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
For Jonathan Demme’s 2004 reworking of The Manchurian Candidate, the director takes a less daring path, as his version mixes elements from the 1962 original and a few changes.
Though the movie’s opening scenes show the platoon’s general dislike for Shaw, their cumulative memory of him is that of a hero and a virtual saint.
The Manchurian Candidate appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

HD DVD Review: The Manchurian Candidate | High-Def Digest
Both the original and remake of 'The Manchurian Candidate' are tough to discuss without spoiling their many plot twists, so I won't even try.
Ultimately, 'The Manchurian Candidate' is not a perfect film, but it is a worthy remake that possesses a genuine urgency and relevance rare in today's world of cynical, cash-in "reimaginings." Compelling as a drama, a political thriller and even sci-fi, 'The Manchurian Candidate' remains somewhat underrated and overlooked.
The 12-minute "The Cast of 'Manchurian Candidate'" adds a bit of much-needed perspective on the film's characters, though most of the EPK interview snippets with the likes of Demme, Pyne, Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep are too fast-paced for the cast to be able to get at anything really meaty.

In The Manchurian Cadidate the communists have been replaced by the corporate suits: the evil men and women who want to rule the world for their own financial gain.
I wish there was more of that in the Manchurian Candidate, and that we were given more of an enemy than a rather tepid, faceless corporation.
Everything about their plan is revealed, but when it all goes sour at the end, all we see is the board of directors crying in the board room because they are obviously caught.

If you aren't familiar with the history of The Manchurian Candidate, please pay attention, because it is, in my opinion, one of the classic books of the twentieth century -- as opposed to all that literary nonsense that the college professors would have you believe in.

Nobody plays solitaire in Jonathan Demme's new rendition of The Manchurian Candidate, and I wondered why until I reflected on the meaning of the card game in the original 1962 film, wherein a brainwashed soldier was triggered to kill by the sight of the queen of diamonds.
Today, communism isn't a big worry; terrorism is, and, for some of us, the bigger worry is a government that takes away our rights in the name of fighting terrorism and does deals with corporations that profit handsomely from military operations.
Thus, in the remake, the puppetmaster is not Manchuria but Manchurian Global, a Halliburton-like outfit represented by three shady guys, including a stogie-waving Dean Stockwell.

A Fistful of Reviews - The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
It begins promisingly enough, and now really is the time to unleash a remake of a movie that is still as surprisingly topical as the original “Manchurian Candidate” on an unsuspecting public.
The movie begins with ominous visuals, a surreal twist on political partisanship and debates that could actually be something you might see on CNN one of these days.
Even if the two movies were unrelated, I’d be unsympathetic to a movie that is less topical, shocking and mesmerizing than a thriller made at the height of the Cold War.

 The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
The Manchurian Candidate (1962) is director-producer John Frankenheimer's prophetically tragic, chilling, brilliant, flish (film-noirish) Cold War thriller about brain-washing, conspiracy, the dangers of international Communism, McCarthyism, assassination, and political intrigue.
The movie displays the emerging role and importance of television in broadcasting public affairs and shaping opinion, and the circus atmosphere that surrounds American politics.
Its importance as an un-nervingly close-to-the-truth statement was underlined when it was withdrawn and suppressed from movie theaters after the death of President Kennedy one year later - JFK was allegedly gunned down by the hand of a suspected, robotically-docile, trained and 'brain-washed' assassin.

TheMovieBoy Review - The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
When Raymond Shaw miraculously is chosen as a Vice President candidate under the stern eyes of his mother, Senator Eleanor Prentiss Shaw (Meryl Streep), Marco sets out to prove there is more—much more—to their experiences at war, and that Raymond Shaw may not be the admirable man he himself believes.
As Vice President candidate Raymond Shaw, who doesn't realize he is being controlled until it might be too late, Liev Schreiber (2001's "Kate and Leopold") brings an affecting and conflicted vulnerability to a part that, written wrong, could have become one-dimensional.
"The Manchurian Candidate," a layered, ideal thriller of both ideas and aesthetic grandeur, is genuinely electrifying, a return to prime form for director Jonathan Demme.

The Manchurian Candidate (2004 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Manchurian Candidate is a 2004 American film based on the 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon, and a reimagining of the previous 1962 film.
While the plot still centers on a candidate brainwashed with the involvement of his mother and her own political aims, the mechanics of the story and the parties involved are quite different in cases.
The movie has Shaw (Schreiber) himself as the vice-presidential candidate; Marco (Washington), also brainwashed but not fully aware of it, as the assassin; Eleanor Shaw (Streep), as a power-hungry and ruthless politician.

SPLICEDwire | "The Manchurian Candidate" movie review (2004) "The Manchurian Candidate" review, Jonathan Demme, Denzel ...
Director Jonathan Demme's remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" is eerily effective in bringing the 1962 masterpiece of chilling dark satire and dangerous political corruption up to date for a world in which corporations seemingly pocket candidates, terrorists threaten freedom and fear-mongering has virtually become a campaign platform.
These movies all have their merits but they also have trouble standing up to close scrutiny.
While certainly compelling, "The Manchurian Candidate" runs into similar problems in its last act as the FBI and Shaw's security contingent seem to fall down on the job, making it far too easy to bring about the film's otherwise interesting new twist of an ending -- which is then defused by a banal, unwinding epilogue.

 The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Jonathan Demme's The Manchurian Candidate is arguably more of a retelling of William Cameron Menzies' Invaders from Mars (1953) than it is of John Frankenheimer's incomparable 1962 original.
That element of the arrested is the tragedy that drives The Manchurian Candidate 2004: it's obvious in the sad relationship between Shaw and his mother, and clarified in the inability of anyone in Shaw's company, Marco included, to continue in their lives successful and self-satisfied.
Nevertheless, The Manchurian Candidate is a fine document of this period in time, marking returns to relevance for Demme and Washington.

The Manchurian Candidate review (2004) - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
John Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate is somewhat unique, in that it is timeless in its qualities as a film, however the subject matter regarding Communism and, in a smaller way, McCarthyism, is not as important to today's audiences as it was to those who first saw it back in 1962.
What saves The Manchurian Candidate from blasphemy are the several nifty new twists introduced, as well as the consummate professionalism from every member of the cast and crew.
This is Demme's second remake of a classic film in row, however, unlike his overcooked update of Charade in The Truth About Charlie, he directs with just the right amount of style here, always staying true to the events of the story as they unfold.

Manchurian Candidate, The (2004): Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Demme’s Manchurian Candidate is far from a disgrace, but it's not freewheeling enough, not strange enough to make sense of our gathering dread.
Toothless, gutless, one-note political movies like Jonathan Demme's The Manchurian Candidate, a picture that purports to have a galvanizing, liberal-minded theme (big business is taking over our country and our lives) but is really just ploddingly pedestrian.
Overall, Manchurian Candidate is an interesting political thriller and is competently filmed, but lacks the emotional connectedness required to call it "memorable." Draws many parallels to actual events and subterfuge in current geopolitics and the enormous power wielded by many corporations (Halliburton, Enron?).

The Patron Saint of Bloggers - Movie Review: The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Demme injects the movie with the feeling of uneasiness, filming it in such a way as to share the crippling paranoia and mental manipulation experienced by main character Ben Marco (Denzel Washington), Raymond Shaw, and others (including Jeffrey Wright, one of the most underrated actors working today).
The idea was sound, but I think he went to it too early in the movie, forcing it on Denzel's POV before we get the sense of how deeply affected his character has been by outside forces.
In fact, if I had to pick my biggest complaint about the movie is that its familiarity ruined a lot the suspense for me. A good thriller should be half a step ahead of its viewers, so the big reveals shock and surprise them without feeling like they've come out of left field.

I don't think too many fans were looking for a remake of the popular 1962 film "The Manchurian Candidate", but I suppose that Jonathan Demme ("Silence of the Lambs") is one of the finer choices to helm such a project, despite his terrible remake of "Charade".

The Manchurian Candidate (2004) Movie Review by John Sylva at The Movie Insider
Despite movie violence and gore being at an all-time peak, the flashbacks to the actual implanting in Kuwait are less prominent and a bit tamer here than they were in Frankenheimer’s film.
Demme’s Manchurian Candidate is more interested in the potential of the implants than the act of brainwashing itself (though one great sequence does show the implantation of a chip into Raymond); his version thrives completely on the conflicts that arise through Major Marco’s quest for truth and the Shaw family’s elaborate dysfunction.
By making Raymond the Manchurian candidate himself (rather than his senator stepfather, as was the case with the source material), the film has put his complex character directly in the line of fire to create an intense plot dynamic that pays off wonderfully in the climax.
