The Manhattan Transfer first came to the general public's attention as a retro act, a nostalgic throwback in a era consumed with nostalgia -- the early/mid-'70s -- and their debut Atlantic album, as well as their 1975 summer replacement TV series, catered unashamedly to that market.

MANHATTAN TRANSFER - John Dos Passos - Penguin Classics
A colourful, multi-facted chronicle of New York in the early 1920s, Manhattan Transfer ranks with Joyce's Ulysses as a powerful and often lyrical meditation on the modern city.
Using experimental montage and collage techniques borrowed from the cinema, and the jumbled case histories of a picaresque range of characters from dockside crapshooters to high-society flappers, Dos Passos constructs a brilliant picture of New York City as a great futuristic machine filled with motion, drama and human tragedy.

From their origins as a retro-themed vocal-jazz quartet (the cover art features an Art Nouveau caricatured silhouette of the group) to their experiments with vocalese, Latin music, pop, and R&B, the Manhattan Transfer was an adventurous and distinctive outfit.
Naturally, there is plenty of the group's swing- and be-bop-influenced material (such as their simmering vocal interpretation of the Hendricks/Zawinul classic "Birdland"), so fans of that sound will not be disappointed.
Comprehensive and well-compiled, this is a great introduction to the Manhattan Transfer's oeuvre, and is a must-buy for fans of vocal jazz.
