When not in the disguise of Zorro, dueling and rescuing peons, Don Diego courts the beautiful Lolita Pulido with bad magic tricks and worse manners and she cannot stand him.

The Mark of Zorro (1940) is an improvement on the Fairbanks silent version of 1920, because of the excellent acting, Mamoulian's direction, and splendid music.
Instead, the popularity of Zorro during most the 1930's was maintained not by Warner Brothers, but by a much less prestigious studio, Republic, which from its creation in 1935 had been specializing in B features and serials, usually in the western genre.
Zorro, dressed in fl, is better portrayed as a mysterious man hiding in shadows with fl and white photography, which is accentuated by the subtle lighting, giving the impression that the candles were the only source of light on the sets.

After an episode in which Zorro must avenge the beating of Fray Felipe, a robed Franciscan, the Pulidos are believed to be harbouring Zorro and helping his escape, and are promptly put in jail.
Fairbanks provides the audience with an electrifying performance as Zorro, and from it, very few people would guess that it was his first venture into the swashbuckling genre, as his swordplay seems as assured as in his later films.
