The script of "The Mark of Zorro" was written by Fairbanks (as Elton Thomas) and directed by Fred Niblo (whose greatest achievement was probably 1925's "Ben-Hur").
From a modern audience's viewpoint, the film has lost most of its appeal, since several Zorro films were made afterwards, and at least one is better than this one.
Apart from the ending, which was completely rewritten (and which manages in the film to be more climactic than in the original story) and a few elements which were combined or eliminated altogether, the letter of the printed source has been maintained, even reproducing some precise pieces of dialogue for the film's titles.

 Zorro Summary
Zorro's first foray onto the big screen came when popular actor Douglas Fairbanks, on his honeymoon with Mary Pickford, read "The Curse of Capistrano." He and Pickford chose that story to kick off their new film studio, United Artists, and in 1920 released it as The Mark of Zorro.
According to Allende's story, the future Zorro was a mestizo born in the 1790s in Alta California, son of the Asturian Captain Don Alejandro de la Vega and a native woman warrior, Toypurnia.

the Mask of Zorro - movie review by Mark Leeper - Eclectica Magazine v2n5
In the story the character of Zorro, dashing outlaw on the side of good hiding behind the guise of the effete fop, was almost a direct steal from the Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel, created in 1904.
The 1920 film was very faithful to the novel, but it revealed much sooner who was behind the mask so it would better show off Fairbanks's talents.
Zorro was the original "Caped Crusader" of American pop culture and undoubtedly was part of the inspiration for Batman.
