The Crewe Manuscript (Plates 8 and 9) is a holograph in Coleridge's handwriting on both sides of a single sheet.
At times, the account of the poem's composition in the Crewe endnote throws useful light on the 1816 Preface and makes precise things which are there left vague: thus, the "slight indisposition" and the unnamed "anodyne" of the 1816 Preface are identified specifically in the Crewe endnote as "dysentery" and "two grains of Opium".
Scholarship has shown that the information in the Crewe endnote is reliable and that, where the two accounts overlap (as on the question of the date of the poem's composition), the Crewe version is to be preferred.
