  THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES - DVD
Matheson was brought on board to adapt Bradbury's anthology The Martian Chronicles to mini-serial TV in 1979--and the result is a long discussion in three parts that finds Matheson winnowing away most, though not all, of Bradbury's fluffy poesy to reveal the essential emptiness at the core of Bradbury's flights of social speculation.
Likewise, a scene where a shapeshifting Martian appears to Father Peregrine (Weaver) as Christ in his passion threatens to examine the cruelty embedded in the idea of a literal communion mass (this was the series' most controversial sequence)--but washes out as a meek variation on the series' theme that mankind is rather small-minded.
The disappointment of The Martian Chronicles isn't that it's boring (and it is, something that Bradbury found to be his only major complaint with it), or that its special effects are horrible even by the standards of the day.

Bradbury's Martians are superior to men (more sensitive, more warrior-like, more artistic, more philosophical, more cultured, more advanced, more intelligent) while at the same time not possessing any attributes that are not common to men (see the foregoing list).
The Martian Chronicles is a wonderful book from the genius mind of Ray Bradbury.
TMC consists of 26 short stories, some interconnected, others not, producing poetry of modern literature coupled with stories that capture the feel of the early Twilight Zone episodes (something this book would have innovated).

Martians invaded in H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" (and the 1938 radio version by Orson Welles) and a slew of cheap science fiction movies.
Martian invasions, of course, were stand-ins for timely issues: immigration, race relations, and (naturally) the Red Menace of Communism.
Ray Bradbury's 1951 "The Martian Chronicles" featured a Mars colonized by humans to the planet's detriment, and Robert Heinlein's 1961 "Stranger in a Strange Land" told the story of a child educated by Martians who reaches a deeper level of consciousness than humans.

Belief in telepathy (direct mind-to-mind communication of thoughts) has little or no scientific basis, but it is a staple of science fiction because it makes possible interesting plots and because as here it solves the knotty problem of how alien races can communicate with each other.
In the previous stories the Martians had no problem in perceiving that the thoughts invading their minds were alien; can you come up with any explanation for why they might now view the earth people as manifestations of their own minds?

Of course, we Martians also believe in the concept of modernization, that is, the process by which our robot servants modernize our facades and change our interior spaces to make ever more room for bigger and better chips and energy sources.
Martian hardscience continues to advance, however, and now that we are beginning to uncover human fossils we may soon be able to actually clone an Earthling, jack it, jack it on or jack it off and ask it what it knows of its past.

Even at this late stage, Bradbury was still able to tap into the Lowellian, golden-age myth of canals and intelligent Martians, even though he and presumably most of his readers knew that the real planet Mars appeared incapable of supporting anything but the most primitive forms of.
Bradbury's main goal, however, is not astronomical accuracy but to contrast the "graceful, beautiful and philosophical" Martians, and their love of the aesthetic, with technology-obsessed humankind.
Thus he explores how civilizations and intelligence elsewhere might have developed along completely different lines (see extraterrestrial intelligence, more advanced than us).

Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles and Death
Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles gives its readers many ideas of how life may be or may have been on the planet of Mars.
Death was prominent in many of the stories included in the Chronicles specifically in situations as killing of humans by Martians, killing of Martians by humans, killing of humans by humans and the dead coming back to life.
Bradbury may have imagined that Martians would not be friendly and approving of the humans and given them the very human characteristic of becoming frightened andturning to drastic measures to take care of the unknowns.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: The Martian Chronicles
Though superficially sprawling in scope, spanning some 27 years, the great power of Ray Bradbury's masterful science-fiction novel The Martian Chronicles is the dispassionate brevity with which the author relates the tale of humankind's inevitably calamitous colonization of the neighboring red planet.
The narrative proceeds chronologically, depicting the first manned landing through the perspective of a Martian couple (the husband, jealous and protective of his wife and his planet, murders the strange intruders), then shifting to the human point of view for the rest of the picture.
The second landing, which finds its trio of astronauts getting tricked by the Martians into believing they've landed on a strange approximation of heaven, returning to their hometowns, and reuniting with dead parents, is one of the more effectively adapted episodes.
