  Isaac Asimov
Asimov began contributing stories to science fiction magazines in 1939; his short story "Nightfall" (1941) is described in Bewildering Stories, issue 8, as one of "the most famous science-fiction stories of all time" [1].
In 1942 he began his Foundation stories — later collected in the Foundation Trilogy: Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952), and Second Foundation (1953) — which recount the collapse and rebirth of a vast interstellar empire in a universe of the future.
In 1956 Asimov published the short story "The Last Question", his personal favorite and considered by many to be a contender to "Nightfall".

The title story, The Martian Way, was Asimov's response to the McCarthy Era and an early exploration of terraforming Mars.
The Martian Way of the title may be seen as an expression of the idea of manifest destiny.
Asimov was particularly proud of the story's prediction of the euphoria to be experienced by astronauts on spacewalks which were then still thirteen years in the future.

Even though The Martian Way is one of Asimov's lesser known collections, it is probably one of the best examples of his writing I have read in terms of variety and entertainment.
The stories are a bit clunky, the plots unravel a bit unsteadily and the character development is not as polished as his later work (e.g.
The story seems to be a precursor to his Galactic Empire novels and in terms of a timeline seems to fit into an era just before the colonization of the original 50 Spacer planets.

 Isaac Asimov FAQ
The story was his first attempt at a "future historical" and was bounced around from editor to editor until it was finally published.
The problem presented in the story is that the goose lays golden eggs, and through careful scientific analysis, it is discovered that the goose is a living nuclear reactor that utilizes the isotope oxygen-18 to convert the isotope iron-56 to the isotope gold-197.
Six of Asimov's stories were used for episodes of this British TV anthology series, which ran on the BBC in the U.K. for 20 episodes from 1965 to 1966, and for a third season of 13 episodes in 1969.

That Cuban flag you mention in your story, was waving on the patrol boat that recently sunk and killed dozens of innocent women and children in the open seas.
Two weeks later Caridad submitted her short story on the Cuban flag to the review committee without the letter from France, knowing that since both documents were so geometrically opposed in views, it would only cause confusion, and its inclusion could have hurt her chances of winning the contest.
On the other side of the coin, in Cuba, Fidel Castro has used nationalism to enslave the minds of a nation for more than forty five years, and that same nationalism has been used in the exile community to often manipulate public opinion and garner support for groups who did not deserve it.

Review of The Martian Way and Other Stories
This is the first of three great Asimov anthologies from the 1950’s, and, in a peculiar way, has had the most influence on me as a person, although I am far from considering the best of the three.
Of the four stories, "The Deep" is probably the slightest.
As for "The Martian Way", Asimov was fonder of it than probably the story in and of itself deserves.

Other writers have changed the face of their genres before: J. Tolkein in high fantasy, Robert E. Howard in sword-and-sorcery, John Dickson Carr in mystery, and Max Brand in westerns--all come to mind.
In "A Martian Odyssey," Weinbaum introduced extraterrestrials that were "truly alien, and yet believable because their differences came out of their altered environments and different but workable systems of logic," writes Brian Stableford in the Science Fiction Encyclopedia.

Generally most of the stories hit their targets in a bulleyes, you have the occassional tale (like the one with "Blob" in the title) that are just a bit too much on the experimental side to have much of an impact.
And yet there are others such as "Dog in a Fisherman's Net" that are basically timeless and work as pure story and take you to a place that may or may not have ever existed.
The stories in this volume vary greatly in length: 2 fall into the 60-70 page range (and could, I suppose, be considered novellas), 2 fall into the less than 10 page range, and the rest are of various lengths in between; this nicely adds to the overall variety of the collection.

His next (and final) two Foundation books were stories of the life of Hari Seldon, written largely because he couldn't figure out what would happen after _Foundation_and_Earth_.
He therefore wrote "Now You See It--" as a way to end the series, but John Campbell, the editor of *Astounding*, would have none of it and insisted that Asimov alter the ending so that the series could continue.
But if you remember the correct title, you will probably find the story listed in the "Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections", compiled by William Contento, at , which covers stories anthologized before 1984, or in "The Locus Index: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror: 1984-1996", at .

Asimov has created a Mars colony which feels real on a number of levels—how the Martians live, what drives them, how they relate to the Earth which sent them out.
The combination, then, is of interesting characters in an interesting setting, finding an interesting solution to an interesting problem—which usually tends to result in an interesting story.

His trilogy of novels, known as The Foundation Trilogy (1951-53), Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation (1951-53), which recounts the collapse and rebirth of a vast interstellar empire in the universe of the future, is his most famous work of science fiction.

Some books listed in _Books in Print_ are merely new titles attached to old books (e.g., _The history of physics_, _Triangle_), which Asimov did not count.
