The Marvelettes' career epitomized the haphazard progress endured by many of the leading girl-groups of the early 60s.
This effervescent slice of pop-RandB captivated teenage audiences in the USA, and the song was introduced to an even wider public when the Beatles recorded a faithful cover version on their second album.
After an attempt to repeat the winning formula with "Twistin' Postman", the Marvelettes made the Top 20 again in 1962 with "Playboy" and the chirpy "Beechwood 4-5789".

The Marvelettes were one of the first of the fabulous girl groups to put great rock-and-roll songs on the charts in the 60's.
The group was formed by Gladys Horton and others at Inkster High School in Inkster, Michigan [a suburb of Detroit] in the early 60's, and chose as the group name the "Casinyets," a contraction of "can't sing yet." The original group members were Horton, Georgeanna Marie Tillman, Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart and Georgia Dobbins.
There are groups touring today as the Marvelettes that do not include any members who sang with the Marvelettes in the 60's.

 The Marvelettes
Most of the early hits were delivered by Gladys Horton, and they had a brief mid-decade renaissance when Smokey Robinson started writing songs expressly for Wanda Young, but by 1970 the hits had run out and Motown pulled the plug.
It's no coincidence that the album's big hit, the title track co-written by Dobbins (and later covered by the Beatles), is one of the few tracks that doesn't feature that keyboard sound.
Also, "Postman" is sung by the one Marvelette with a deep, powerful voice (I'm guessing it's Horton), and her features are the album's standouts - everyone else sounds interchangably shrill ("Happy Days").

The songs were simple with an upbeat tempo, smooth, tranquil, breezy choral lines that gave anyone who enjoyed the music a reason to come out and experience a night without chaos or confusion, because everyone was smooth and walked with a glide so sharp you would think the sidewalk was wet.
Although Loni Clark was not a member of the original Marvelettes group, her style and stage presence were heavily impacted by the "Marvelettes" and other Motown greats.

Martha Reeves was a better singer that the Marvelettes’ Gladys Horton and Wanda Young; she sang with an edifying passion; her voice bangs along; it lurches and gnashes; her personality shines through these songs in a brassy, impetuous way.

Mid-decade in the 1960s, The Marvelettes had a renaissance as a trio, a new image and a new lead from within the group.
For their 1970's album, "The Return of the Marvelettes" (they were only gone about a half-year), the girls did not return on the album cover in hip outfits or skin-exposed but with cowgirl hats, gaucho pants, fl riding boots and rough-riding on real tough horses!!!
Although The Marvelettes continued to have hit songs throughout the 1960s and their popularity continued, albeit to a lesser degree, their touring schedule was often cruel with one nighters spread over many states for a non-stop month without any relief.
