  Unsharp Masking in the darkroom
After the making of the mask (or perhaps I should say masks, as it is possible to use them in combinations) you will then sandwich the original and mask together in a registration carrier and print the combination as a single print.
What would occur if the mask is properly created is that there would be a small amount of density added to the high areas which in effect would permit your print time to increase for that specific negative without blocking up the high areas.
The advantage of this mask is that you may alter the overall contrast of a specific range of densities in the print with very fine control of those specific areas and have it be repeatable with accuracy.

Mask (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mask is a 1985 film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, and starring Cher and Eric Stoltz.
The film concerns the life and early death of Roy L. "Rocky" Dennis, a boy who suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, an extremely rare disorder known commonly as lionitis due to the disfiguring cranial enlargements that it causes.
The commercial success of Mask was a milestone in the career of Bogdanovich, who had directed a string of critical and financial failures following his three successful films of the early 1970s.

The Man in the Iron Mask (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There have been several movies entitled The Man in the Iron Mask, all based on the final section of the novel The Vicomte de Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas, which was itself based on the 18th century legend of The Man in the Iron Mask.
The original 1929 release, though a silent film, actually had a soundtrack: several short narrations delivered by Fairbanks (in a rather orotund manner -- it was no wonder he was much less successful in "talkies" than he had been in the silent era), and a musical score with a few sound effects.
In this version, the "man in the iron mask" is introduced as prisoner number 64389000 based on the number related to his namesake found at the Bastille.

The attempt at humour mixes badly with the atmosphere of the film (heavy throughout), the general plot (with the emphasis on revenge), and the casting of Hopkins.
It seems that the writers of the film were unable to decide whether the film would be for kids or adults, and decided to go for both, strictly for box-office prospects.

An unsharp mask is a form of contrast reducing mask, the effect of which is to allow you to make the print at a higher contrast than normal, thus improving apparent sharpness and also improving local contrast especially in the shadows.
You register the original negative and the mask film with a punch and pin registration of some sort to make the exposure of the negative onto the mask film.
Henry, The reason that the masks are called unsharp is that they are made with the mask film and the camera negative separated by their respective bases.

The role needs an actor who will own the frame with his confidence, the very power the mask provides; all Kennedy can do is flail around, pitifully attempt to mimic Carrey's mask voice, and trust that the CGI will take care of the rest.
The film plays to Guterman's strength: pitching the comedy at such a toxic and screeching level that it soon becomes white noise.

Black Mask Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Black Mask" is the latest Hong Kong action flick to be ported Stateside, spurred by the warm welcome that its star, Jet Li, received from his North American debut, "Lethal Weapon 4".
Instead of becoming engaged in the Black Mask's quest to right wrongs and protect the innocent, all the audience ends up seeing are two grown men trying to beat each other senseless, which quickly becomes boring after the first few minutes.
Unfortunately, these same elements have been better utilized in other films, such as "Batman" and "The Mask of Zorro", and in "Black Mask", the application of these elements to the plot mechanics are juvenile at best.
