After the death of the master of the household, the most authoritative member of the family was the guardian (sâlâr), who was responsible for the care and protection of women and minors.

In the eighteenth century, the head of a household typically was polygamous and also possessed concubines, the number of which depended on his wealth and ability to support a large retinue of family members, slaves and clients.
Elsewhere, I have argued that the neo-Mamluk household was a fictive kinship system in which the master of a bayt assumed the role of father toward his slave/sons and slaves within the same household who were manumitted at the same time (khushdashun) regarded each other as brothers.
In this way, the new head of the household legitimized his succession to power and ensured that the widow of his predecessor became a member of his household and not a rival's with all the property she owned or controlled, her network of female clients and her status as the wife of a high-ranking grandee.

 Roman Household Slavery
In addition, the household slaves were representatives of the master, performing various tasks and errands in the master’s name, both within the house and within the city.
Household slaves with adequate education and/or training, who behaved properly, had the possibility of being promoted to a more prestigious position during the course of their service to the master.
However, the slaves also had proper motivation to avoid harming their master, because the penalty for murdering a master was that all the slaves in the entire household were put to death.

It was not until the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that family began to connote the intimacy of a nuclear family.
During this time many social changes contributed to the shift from the concept of the familia household to the German term familie and the French termfamille, which referred to a household or an extended family of blood relations only.

A female is properly called “Miss” until she is married, at which point she is properly addressed as “Mrs.” Which is an alteration of the word “Mistress”, as in, a female master; intended, I believe, to imply female master of a household.
Power issues aside, it would be more philologically equivalent if, since the married female is to be addressed as “Mrs.” (female master of the household), then a married male would be more rightly, semantics-wise, to be addressed as “Master”.
