 | | A female is properly called “Miss” until she is married, at which point she is properly addressed as “Mrs.” Which is an alteration of the word “Mistress”, as in, a female master; intended, I believe, to imply female master of a household. |
 | | Power issues aside, it would be more philologically equivalent if, since the married female is to be addressed as “Mrs.” (female master of the household), then a married male would be more rightly, semantics-wise, to be addressed as “Master”. |
 | | A couple of my uncles would address my brother as “Master Dandykat” when he was a boy, but I can’t say I’ve heard the term used in the past decade or two. |
