Some people have argued over the ensuing years that hunting is responsible for a decline in Mearns' quail and have been successful in getting the Commission to lower the limit even though AGFD did not believe the lower limit was necessary.
None of this famous Mearns' area was designated as "Quality Habitat," and due to this neglect has not received the benefit of Mearns' habitat guidelines in relation to grazing.
Overgrazing is the main habitat threat to this bird and with new habitat guidelines, possible designation of more Mearns' quality habitat areas, and a general relaxation in grazing brought on by a host of factors, we think quality habitat (useable space for Mearns' quail) is likely to increase on the Coronado.
