OFFOFFOFF film review THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice) movie by Michael Radford ...
William Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" is about a Jewish moneylender and his bond to extract a pound of flesh from the wealthy merchant Antonio, the forfeiter of a debt.
The film is set in 16th century Venice and director Michael Radford relies on setting, mood, and realism to tell its story, rejecting lavish period costumes or a modern setting with a rock score to appeal to a wider audience.
Merchant has been one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays and analysts have debated for a long time whether it is an anti-Semitic play or simply a play that reflects the prevalent view of Christian society in Elizabethan England about the Jews.

The Merchant of Venice-Folger Shakespeare Library
The Merchant of Venice, like most of Shakespeare's comedies, is about love and marriage.
In fashioning in Shylock a character whose function is to frustrate the satisfaction that we are invited to desire for the play's lovers,  Shakespeare has, for many people, brought forth a character who rivals the lovers in the power he exerts over us.
For readers and audiences today, the pleasure that should accompany her saving of Antonio is clouded by what seems to us her cruel treatment of Shylock—but the role of Portia remains one that every Shakespearean actress yearns to play.

The Merchant of Venice Summary & Essays - William Shakespeare
Written sometime between 1596 and 1598, The Merchant of Venice is classified as both an early Shakespearean comedy (more specifically, as a "Christian comedy") and as one of the Bard's problem plays; it is a work in which good triumphs over evil, but serious themes are examined and some issues remain unresolved.
In Merchant, Shakespeare wove together two ancient folk tales, one involving a vengeful, greedy creditor trying to exact a pound of flesh, the other involving a marriage suitor's choice among three chests and thereby winning his (or her) mate.
Indeed, the dominant thematic complex in The Merchant of Venice is much more universal than specific religious or racial hatred; it spins around the polarity between the surface attractiveness of gold and the Christian qualities of mercy and compassion that lie beneath the flesh.

'The Merchant of Venice' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
Michael Radford's splendid film of "The Merchant of Venice" is so somber — and rightly so — for so much of the time that it's hard to remember it is one of Shakespeare's comedies, indeed regarded as one of his greatest.
Radford's direction of the ensemble cast is equally felicitous, for he has encouraged the actors to speak their lines in a conversational, natural way yet at the same time savor the poetry and eloquence of Shakespearean verse.
These and other complications build to "The Merchant of Venice's" climactic trial, during which Shylock's demand for Antonio's pound of flesh is as righteous and just as it is patently absurd and cruel.
