The Harvard Crimson :: News :: The Millionairess
The Millionairess belongs to the former category, but in no way begs comparison with the body of other works written by men of 80.
The Millionairess is, in terms of style and construction, the most conventional of Shaw's late plays.
While before and after it he was veering off in countless strange directions, for this effort Shaw marshalled all his technical prowess and produced the definitive summation of his theories concerning power, money, work, and conscience.

The British Theatre Guide : Reviews - The Millionairess (DVD)
The Millionairess was one of Shaw's final plays, written when he was 79, but still contains sparkling comedy that is almost in Noël Coward mode.
This is particularly the case when the hideously self-possessed heroine finally almost meets her match in a penniless Indian doctor, the part made famous on film by Peter Sellers and here rendered very effectively by future Dr Who, Tom Baker.
The pleasure of The Millionairess lies in Maggie Smith's superb acting as the arch heroine who is used to getting her way and running over those who get in her way.

Absurd casting of Loren at the hands of husband Carlo Ponti and indifferent scripting by Wolf Mankowitz were poor beginnings for this turgid adaptation of Shaw's play.

The Millionairess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Millionairess is a 1960 romantic comedy film starring Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren set in London.
The film may be said to have launched Sellers' international career, since it allowed him to take more challenging roles later, such as his lead in Dr Strangelove.
In recent years, the reputation of The Millionairess has waned somewhat and it is no longer considered the classic it used to be, although it is still enjoyed by fans of the two lead actors.

Shaw's "The Millionairess" is an almost forgotten piece of social comedy, typically intelligent and incisive, a bit long-winded (what, Shaw?!!), filled with skillfully crafted characters and bright dialogue.
"The Millionairess" is a minor work by a major writer, and this production is characterized by skillful performance and a respectful regard for the play.
While the pace and dramatic development might be better directed, the cast is fully capable and the evening thoroughly entertaining.
