The Minus 5 began life as a side project from the Young Fresh Fellows' Scott McCaughey who formed the band in 1993.
McCaughey designed the Minus 5 as a pop collective, and each record the group released featured a new lineup.
By the time they recorded their full-length debut album Old Liquidator in 1995, the Minus 5 consisted of McCaughey, Buck and the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow.

Given their enjoyably shambling live shows, the Minus 5 are hardly the first outfit you'd expect to turn in an album as magnificently crafted as Let the War Against Music Begin.
Good, not great, Minus 5 album : Though McCaughey says that this is, in many ways, closer to what he'd originally envisioned for Let The War Against Music Begin, I think I prefer that album to this one.

In their pop music, T Minus 5 may be able to get away with arrangements where the "block" is sitting squarely in their musical comfort zone.
T Minus 5 won the Midwest Regional Harmony Sweeps back in 2001 and this album definitely piqued my curiousity for what these guys might be able to do with some more imaginatively arranged and varied material and just a smidge of studio indulgence.
It's particularly baffling to me why T minus 5 would stamp themselves a "vocal band" on their album cover, given that their repertoire and style would be most at home in the more conservative church services I've attended over the years.

It was a two-disc effort featuring one Minus 5 disc and one disc of new material from McCaughey's old project, the Young Fresh Fellows, who don't sound all that different apart from a sensibility that is more rock 'n' roll and less studio construct.
Then again, the Minus 5 have operated on a conceptual plain for years -- it's just that the concept has been to create manicured, post-modern Beach Boys homages where the mixes are stuffed with instrumentation.

Here on In Rock, Scott McCaughey states in the liner notes that this latest Minus 5 record is the result of some loosely rehearsed songs he performed with the three Wilco boys at the closing ceremonies of the Lounge Ax in Chicago in January 2000.

Down with Wilco is the latest release from Scott McCaughey's The Minus 5 project, a revolving-door series of collaborations serving as a vehicle for the former Young Fresh Fellow's pop explorations.
The result is a watershed of publicity for the generally low-profile McCaughey, and a confirmation that Minus 5 sideman Peter Buck (also featured here, along with The Posies' Ken Stringfellow, Sean O'Hagan of High Llamas, and other indie-cyclopedia entries) no longer has the starpower to draw media attention himself.
Oh yeah, and as a Minus 5 album it's up to snuff-- as pleasant and listenable as their previous peak, The Lonesome Death of Buck McCoy.
